Shortly after graduating Joe entered the United States Marine Corps where it was his ambition to go into recon once he graduated from basic training. One of his training officers talked him out of it telling him that his IQ was too high, and he was needed elsewhere. That put him on the path to programming and writing software. His principle duty station was on Okinawa and Joe attained the rank of E-5. After leaving the marines he went to Oberlin College in 1975 or 1976. It was there where he took up playing Rugby, it was while he was playing Rugby that Joe incurred an injury that left him a quadriplegic. After his injury he went to live with his sister and brother-in-law in Grand Ledge. After that he lived in a facility in Oregon, when his health started to deteriorate he was transferred to a place in the South.
Will end with a quote from Bill Bala . . . “He was my Bud. He generally had more talent available than could be put to use wherever he was and felt the urge to keep moving. And still is. Semper Fi Bud, see ya on the flip side.”

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight
I am the soft starlight at night
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.

Jessica Ann Norris Hill
April 8, 1953 — May 7, 2022 (Aged 69)
The Life of Jessica Ann (Norris) Hill — Jessica Ann (Norris) Hill, 69, of Grand Ledge, MI passed away on May 7, 2022 at Sparrow Hospital. She was born April 8, 1953 in Pittsburgh, PA, daughter of Jesse William and Josephine Mae (Leonard) Norris. Jessica married the love of her life, Michael Hill on June 11, 1971 and they both celebrated 50 years of marriage last June (2021). Her husband, children, and grandchildren meant the world to her and fulfilled her whole life.
Jessica is survived by her loving husband, Michael Hill; children: Jennifer (Benny) Phillips, Millbrook, AL; Melissa (Aaron) Ledger, Lansing, MI; Joshua (Jess) Hill, Delta, IA; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and her older sister, Jane Burger, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse William and Josephine Mae (Leonard) Norris and her brother, Dennis Lee Norris. She was deeply devoted to her three beloved dogs, Boone, Dandy, and Huckleberry.
Jessica’s family moved to Grand Ledge, MI when she was 8 years old. She was a lover of music and played the acoustic and steel guitar. She was also a member of The Bridge Street Band for years and was a beautiful singer. From Alan Jackson’s “How Great Thou Art,” to “Butter” by BTS (Jessica was a proud member of the BTS ARMY), to every song ever written by Fleetwood Mac, Jessica had a diverse taste in music. She used to sing “Pooh Corner,” “You Are My Sunshine,” and “My Little Buckaroo” to her children when they were little, songs that were passed on and sung to her grandchildren when they were born.
She was known for never passing up a yard sale or a give-away at the curb. She should have had a bumper sticker that read “I stop for yard sales!” This was something she and her mother Josephine, loved to do on weekends when they were together. Later in life, Jessica loved to roam the flea markets with her daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Benny when visiting her family in Alabama and had her own map of flea markets for personal reference. Among her many hobbies, she also loved to play board games, a passion she passed on to her daughter Melissa. She was famous for her skill in Backgammon and Yahtzee, beating nearly everyone she played. Most recently, she enjoyed Catan and once a week with her daughter Melissa and son-in-law Aaron, would play Acquire, which was quickly becoming her newest obsession. Jessica was also learning to play Dungeons and Dragons from her grandchildren.
Jessica was a lover of nature and would often go fishing with her son Joshua and daughter-in-law Jess at various lakes in the area. Needless to say, she enjoyed taking trips; some of her favorite destinations included Frankenmuth, Grand Haven, the Ionia Free Fair, Mackinac Island, and the numerous lighthouses across Michigan. She had a love of fireworks and would never miss the chance to travel to her favorite places to watch them on the Fourth of July. She enjoyed making trips to the casino with her husband as well. Jessica’s family remembers fondly a traveling story of her reading a billboard sign that said, "Snare Trees from Guatemala," but it really said “Buy a Shade Tree for CHRISTMAS”; this is when she realized she needed glasses.
Also known as “Fruit Punch Nana” by her grandchildren, a nickname given to her by granddaughter Tamara Phillips, Jessica was a loving grandmother. She enjoyed crocheting her children and grandchildren gifts for Christmas. It is an agreed upon fact that she managed to crochet something for each member of the entire family. Jessica’s grandchildren also enjoyed spending time with her playing video games including Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros, and American Idol. She was a hilarious, fun-loving Grandma who was there to listen whenever her grandchildren needed her.
Jessica treated everyone she knew like family, from neighbors, to friends, to anyone who needed someone to care. She was a woman of Faith who showed her love for Christ through the love she showed others. She made a profound impact on every person that she met and will be deeply, and sorely missed by many. She leaves behind a legacy of love, through the family that she raised and the countless lives that were touched by her over the course of her life. Jessica hoped that when the time came, those who loved her would not mourn or be sad but would rejoice in the memories they had of her.
A celebration of Jessica’s life will take place May 12, 2022 from 4:00-10:00pm at the American Legion Riders Post 48, 731 N. Clinton St. Grand Ledge, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in loving memory of Jessica Hill to the Wounded Warrior Project, of which she was an avid supporter, at P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516. The family is being served by the Mills Funeral Home, Peters & Murray Chapel, Grand Ledge. Online condolences may be placed at www.millsfuneral.com.

A woman was found dead in her Lansing apartment early Saturday morning and Lansing police are considering her death the city’s sixth homicide this year.
Police were called to 832 1⁄2 N. Larch shortly after midnight where they were met by a man who said he had been stabbed, Lansing police Sgt. Clarence Bisson said. “
After attending his needs they found the body of a white female, “ he said. “We know there was a quarrel of some kind going on.”
Police did not release the victim’s name Saturday. The woman, who is 35 to 40 years old, was discovered in the bedroom of her upstairs apartment.
