Class of 1947
This list of the graduates from the Class of 1947 was compiled from the GLHS 50+ Alumni Association yearly listings of who had passed over the last year at each annual reunion year. We are sure there are others we have missed that need to be added to this list. If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

Florence Ellen Ballentine Vogt
August 20, 1929 – October 4, 2023 (Aged 94)
Happily married for 75 years, high school sweethearts Richard Wilson Vogt and Florence Ellen (Ballentine) Vogt died within hours of each other on October 3rd (Richard) and October 4th (Florence). Their romance sparked when they were the only two to volunteer for dreaded dishwashing duties at a school event, and they were the center of each other's worlds ever after.
They married on May 1, 1948, in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Richard worked for Michigan Bell Telephone for 33 years, retiring in 1981 to spend more time with his sweetie. Florence trained as a bookkeeper; she was also a homemaker and secretary. They raised three daughters, Mary (Stanley) Hunter, Lois (Donald) Albrecht, and Linda (Richard) Holmes, and welcomed many "extra kids" into their lives.
They filled their lives with adventure, camping, picnicking, and hiking as the girls grew up. After retirement, they could often be found traveling and bicycling-famously celebrating their birthdays by biking their age in miles in a single day until their 80s. Florence reluctantly gave up biking at age 90. Richard was still biking early this summer, and they both relished long walks and any opportunity to be outdoors. They loved spending summers in Bayfield, Wisconsin; they also enjoyed several winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
They had a wide circle of friends and were known for their sense of humor, eye-popping athletic feats, contributions to the community (they both volunteered regularly with Meals on Wheels), and, most of all, their unwavering love for each other. They proudly wooed each other, even after 75 years of marriage. They were thrilled to have a 75th anniversary party in May with their entire family present.
Florence was born in Lansing, Michigan, on August 20, 1929, to Peter W. Ballentine and Glenna M. (Zischke) Ballentine. She was an intrepid genealogist who extensively traced the family tree. In her 50s, she began quilting and became well-known for her incredible skill and generosity, donating hundreds of quilts to worthy causes. She had a wonderful circle of quilter friends in East Lansing and later in Saint Paul after they moved to Minnesota in 2010. Florence had a challenging childhood, growing up in the Depression and losing her father when she was 3, but she had an indomitable spirit.
Richard was born in Grand Ledge, Michigan, on July 28, 1929, to Harrison M. Vogt and Mary Blanche (Brett) Vogt. Richard equaled Florence's generosity, donating blood as often as possible and spending more than 40 years recording books for individuals facing blindness. He was a gifted writer and storyteller whose love for puns will trickle on through the generations. Few could top him in a crossword puzzle or a battle of wits. He kept journals throughout his life and was a faithful letter-writer to many. We're fortunate to still have his words.
Remarkably healthy for most of their lives, both suffered vertebral fractures and subsequent reinjuries in the last two months, declining rapidly thereafter. Their nearly simultaneous deaths were a fitting end to their incredible love story.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to The Willows of Ramsey Hill and Brighton Hospice for caring for Florence and to Optage Hospice for Richard's in-home care. Mom and Dad loved each other, loved their families, and made the most out of life. They will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in knowing they don't have to be without each other.
Richard and Florence were preceded in death by their parents; Florence's brother Milton Ballentine; Richard's siblings Virginia Vance, Lyndon Vogt, and Norman Vogt; sons-in-law Donald Albrecht and Richard Holmes; and "extra kid" Jeff Kenyon.
They are survived by their three daughters, Mary (Stanley) Hunter, Lois Albrecht, and Linda Holmes; grandchildren Jennifer Albrecht, Bryce Albrecht (Amanda Belanger), Terence (Youa) Holmes, Ian (Sarah) Hunter, and Ellen (Paul) Gans; and great-grandchildren Bronwen and Greta Hunter, Samuel and Tyler Holmes, and Jameson and Hunter Gans. Also survived by cousin Irene Jane Brett, nephew Lyle Vogt, niece Sherry Ballentine Hays, and best man Jim Crawford; special "extra kids" Linda Reeder Overholt, Carol Cosens Yocum, Susan Larson, Jean Catto Hildreth, and Kris "Kupcake" Reichenbach; and many more beloved friends, apartment neighbors, Holy Spirit and Gloria Dei quilters, and extended family.
No services. Holcomb-Henry-Boom-Purcell of Saint Paul. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Meals on Wheels; Area Community Fund, The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library; Albrecht-Vogt Family Fund, Apostle Islands Community Fund, P.O. Box 332, Bayfield, WI 54814; or donor's choice.

He graduated at the age of 16 from Grand Ledge High School in 1947, active in his Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter. He continued to help his father farm until he met his future wife, Dorothy Mikesell, while drag racing on Strange Highway. They married on September 23, 1950 in Lansing Michigan.
John's first job after marriage was as a herdsman at Crapo Farms located in Swartz Creek MI. From there, he ran the Cecil and Nina Myers dairy farm in Howell MI and started his education at Michigan State University taking night short-courses. This took him back to Grand Ledge and part-time farming while he went to Michigan State full time and received his Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Agricultural Economics. From there he was the 4-H agent for Montcalm County for 1 year; then County Agricultural Agent in Mecosta County for 2 years. Then Ore-Ida Foods Inc. came to Michigan and hired John as the field manager at the Greenville MI site in 1964. He then moved to Ontario OR in 1969, then Boise ID as general manager of agricultural operations in 1970. He was then Vice President of Procurement from 1977 until 1987 when he retired. John was active in the agricultural community, serving as chairman of the Idaho Potato Commission, member of the agriculture and crop protection committee of the American Frozen Foods Institute, a member of the American Farm Economic Association, and the American Potato Association and the board of directors for the Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry.
After retirement, he and Dorothy traveled the US in their 5th-wheeler to such places as Arizona, northeastern US, Florida, California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. They traveled internationally to such places as Japan, New Zealand, Austria, England, Ireland, Switzerland, and Germany. But, his favorite place was the cabin at Warm Lake where he and Dorothy spent many summers working at fixing up and relaxing. His well-earned shared retirement with Dorothy was abruptly ended with the unexpected death of Dorothy on November 27, 1992. He found love again and married Ember Celany in 1994 and they spent many years also doing more traveling around the world. It was during this time that Ember introduced him to the Overs and Unders Club. He made many friends through this group of people that stuck with him, even after Ember's death on September 28, 2009. John found happiness and love again at the Elks weekly dancing when we he met Geri Worthington. Geri provided much needed love and support until he died.
Survivors include his 4 children and their spouses: Susan (Leo) Nickasch, Neenah WI; Alice (Rick) Beveridge, Boise ID; Jennifer (Joe) Quirk, Longview WA; and Jeff (Monika) Catey, Moses Lake WA; and grandchildren Cheryl (Mike) Aguilera, Kirkland WA; Tricia Beveridge and fiancé Kean-san Choo, Boise ID; Jyl and Dave Glancey, Boise; Kelly Quirk, Portland OR; Erin and Matt Janiga, Washington DC; Tracy and Joe Solis, Colfax WA; and Dorothy and Warren Catey, Moses Lake WA and 5 great-grandchildren and 2 more expected in 2014. John Leonard Doane
November 30, 1928 -- April 12, 2017 (Aged 88)
John Leonard Doane, age 88, of Lowell, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family early Wednesday morning, April 12, 2017. He was born on November 30, 1928, in Lansing, to Clarence John and Gretchen (Newth) Doane. John was raised on the family farm near Lansing and that farm remained a hub of family activities and gatherings for much of his life, taking his own children and grandchildren back there often to visit and celebrate holidays and other important events. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School with the Class of 1947. John exchanged vows with Irene May Stull in Lansing of July 3, 1948, and the couple has enjoyed 68 years of marriage. He went to work for the Michigan Department of Transportation shortly after high school and built a successful career there as an Engineer on road projects all over the state. Early in his career, he and Irene used a 16-foot travel trailer to move from location to location as the road projects required, making a home wherever they went. As they added children to their growing family, space became tight and even an open dresser drawer could be made into a comfortable bed for an infant. As the children grew, they realized they needed to settle down and get established in a school district so they bought property in Lowell and have lived there for 63 years. John will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his dear wife, Irene; John leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Vickie (Dennis) Drougel of Grandville, Ann (Louis) Switlik of Kentwood, John Doane of Lowell, Jim (Linda) Doane of Lowell and Bill (Heather) Doane of Lowell; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clarence.
John’s family is planning a private gathering to commemorate and celebrate his life. Those wishing to express sympathy are welcomed to consider making a donation in John’s memory to Faith Hospice, Trilluim Woods, 8214 Pfeiffer Farms Dr., SW, Byron Center, Michigan, 49405, The Kidney Foundation or the charity of the donor’s choice. Richard Wilson Vogt
July 28, 1929 – October 3, 2023 (Aged 94)
