Class of 1944
This list of the graduates from the Class of 1944 was compiled from the GLHS 50+ Alumni Association yearly listings of who had passed over the last year at each annual reunion year. We are sure there are others we have missed that need to be added to this list. If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

John Lynden Barnes
December 13, 1926 -- October 11, 2017
John Lynden Barnes, Mesa, AZ, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017, in Mesa, Arizona.
John was born December 13, 1926 to Ernest and Eva (Meade) Barnes in Mulliken, Michigan. He was the youngest of two sons. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1944. He was married to Katherine Barnes (Anderson) in 1945. They had three daughters, Cynthia Lyn Tiller of Eagle, MI, Dian Barnes of Wacousta, MI and Ingrid Ester Tiller of Hendersonville, North Carolina.
John began his business and career in Grand Ledge, Michigan, as a contractor and builder. He built many residences and businesses in Grand Ledge and the Lansing area, many of which are still part of the communities today. John Lynden Barnes was hard-working and industrious. His building career spanned decades and states and he retired in 2006 after more than 62 years of doing work he loved.
In later years, he married Shirley Sztorc and they enjoyed many years together in Mesa, Arizona. John loved to travel and they shared many wonderful vacations in Mexico, Sedona, Arizona and his favorite, Kauai, Hawaii.
John is survived by his wife, Shirley Barnes, daughters Ingrid and Cindy, stepdaughter KellyRuff (Sztorc) and family, grandchildren Sonja Mattson-Barnes, Cody Mattson, Jason Richey, Justin Slocum, Ingalisa Reiger, Britta Stine and Stan Stine, and several great grandchildren and one great great grandaughter. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Eva Barnes, his daughter Dian, and his brother.
The family requests that you remember John Lynden Barnes as a talented builder, a man who loved life and lived it to the fullest and leaves many stories and memories that will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bright Focus Foundation for Alzheimer's Research.
Etta Beagle Teusink
DATE OF PASSING: April 29, 2017
On April 29, 2017, Etta Beagle Teusink, completed her earthly course and joins her beloved husband, Rev. Raymond John Teusink, awaiting the resurrection of the dead and return of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she served through all her life.
Etta was born the youngest of nine children into a close-knit, loving farm family in Michigan, where she enjoyed all the blessings of growing up with six elder brothers and two sisters. She earned a nursing degree (with honors) from Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan, (through the US Army Cadet Nursing Core) and met the love of her life, Ray Teusink, through his sister who was also a nurse. Their marriage and life-partnership put Ray through college and seminary in Holland, Michigan, and several decades of pastoring in South Dakota, Arizona, Yakima and Nebraska. Their marriage produced three grateful children: Tim, Mary and Stephen. Ray was clear in letting their children know that he had had the extremely good fortune to have “married up” in life and their mother was a woman to be respected and obeyed.
Etta’s small stature and gentle, sweet personality could be mistaken for weakness but anyone who knew her at all was quickly disabused of this erroneous impression. One incident from her long nursing career is illustrative—an ill-tempered surgeon once threw an instrument at her in anger in the operating room and was immediately ducking, as the instrument came flying back. Her nursing career made a lasting impression on her son, who became a physician and surgeon, learning early in life from his mother’s professionalism, love for people, and passion for caring, the truth that nurses are an indispensable part of the health care team.
In addition to the usual challenges of parenting intelligent, energetic and challenging children, Etta and Ray successfully raised their youngest, special-needs, yet independent son, Stephen, who has lived from three months of age with cerebral palsy, resulting from neurologic complications of chicken pox contracted as an infant. After graduating from Davis High School, Steve moved to Seattle, where he attended college, worked for the City of Seattle and served as a juror (three times). Daughter Mary recently retired from the Yakima School District and enjoys spending time with her husband, Nick, traveling to visit friends and family; son Tim and his wife have served as career medical/educational missionaries in Haïti, Rwanda, Ethiopia and now live in France as a base for teaching around the African Continent.
Etta is preceded by her parents, eight siblings and her husband of 44-1/2 years, for whom she lovingly cared for during the last decade of his life, as he suffered from progressive dementia. She is a 36-year survivor of metastatic breast cancer and although physically challenged during the last years of her life, always continued to encourage, minister to, and pray for those in need. During her last years, she received loving care at Landmark Care Center (she had previously worked as a nurse at its predecessor, Yakima Convalescent), where she continued to use her nursing skills in making sure she received the right medicines…at the right dosage…at the right time. Her children are very grateful to all the loving and dedicated staff at Landmark, who enabled Etta to live her final years in dignity, surrounded by love and respect. She participated in Bible studies at Landmark into the last week of her life.
Etta is lovingly survived by her children, Dr. Tim Teusink, who with his wife Muriel have two children, Jonathan & Rebekah; Mary Anderson, who with her husband Nick have three children, Aimee & Jamie Dolan, Erin & Tony Fortier, and Steve & Heather Anderson, and seven great-granddaughters: Madison, Vivian, Katelyn, Marygrace, Sophie, Olivia, and Eleanor; and her son, Steve.
Her long and loving life are a testament to God’s grace and mercy and are a cause for celebration and rejoicing. She will be remembered for her love, grace, humor and enthusiasm for life, all of which were grounded in her dynamic Christian faith.
Her Celebration of Life Service will be held at East Valley Reformed Church, Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at the Holland Cemetery in Moxee, next to her husband.
Etta’s preference is that no one comes to her memorial service wearing black or with a sad face.
She is not dead…she is now more alive than she has ever been.
In lieu of flowers, Etta would prefer that donations be made to the multifaceted community outreach of the Yakima Union Gospel Mission - www.yugm.org. To share a memory with the family, you may do so at www.brooksidefhc.com.

They lived most of their married life in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Robert began his career at the Loan Deposit Bank in Grand Ledge in 1947, where he eventually became the Vice President. In 1967, he became Vice President of Michigan National Bank. Eventually, Robert left the banking business and started working for Harry O. Culp Insurance Agency in 1975. Three years later he opened his own insurance agency, Corey Insurance, where he retired from in 1997. Robert was an active member in the Grand Ledge Rotary where he held several offices and was the treasurer for 26 years. He was a founding member of the American Legion Cole-Briggs Post 48 where he held several offices, and was awarded a lifetime membership in August of 2016. Robert also served as a member of the Grand Ledge Chamber of Commerce holding many offices within the Chamber. Robert loved to play golf, and for many years he and Gloria were members of the Portland Country Club and the Grand Ledge Country Club. In, July 2003, after having spent many winters in Florida, Robert and Gloria decided to move permanently to Brooksville, Florida so they could enjoy playing golf year round. They became members of the High Pointe Golf Community and made several special friends there. Robert was an avid fisherman and loved being on the water. He enjoyed fishing for blue gill, crappie, perch, and walleye with anyone who would join him. He was mainly a “pan fisherman” because, to him, they were the best eaters. He would frequently bring home his limit of fish, clean them, and generously share his catch with friends and family. Robert’s other interests included bowling, hunting, snowmobiling, and polka dancing. He experienced many achievements in his lifetime, but his greatest achievement was his family. Robert never missed an opportunity to boast about his daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He loved being in the company of his family and was truly happiest when surrounded by his loved ones.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Gloria. Robert is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Rick Merrifield, Ann and Doug Wagner, and Susan and Edward Piercefield. He is the beloved Gramps to Erin (Brian) Nimphie, Sara (Michael) Bell; Corey (Samantha), Stefani, Jacob (Rebecca) and Benjamin Wagner; Bonnie and Aimee Katalenich; and Steven Corey. He is survived by his five great grandchildren: Grace, Evalynne, Easton, Lauren, and Leo. Robert is also survived by his sister-in-law, Patricia Brewbaker, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for both Robert and Gloria will be held at a later date when it is safe to gather. Beverly Lou Parker Dudeck
December 4, 1926 — February 20, 2022 (Aged 95)
Beverly Lou Dudeck was born on December 4, 1926 in Wabash, Indiana and was called Home to God on February 20, 2022. She was the youngest of four girls, with one sister, Marilyn, having already died before Bev was born. When Bev was four months old, her birth mother died. Her two older sisters, Billie and Wanda, were moved to the care of an aunt and Bev was moved to Michigan, near Charlotte, to live with her paternal grandparents. A neighbor to the grandparents knew of a family able to raise an infant, so in June 1927, Bev became Beverly Lou Parker, the daughter of Clarence and Olga Parker. Bev liked to tell the story of her first few nights with her mom and dad; she was so little, a dresser drawer was her crib for the first few days. The Parkers lived in Mulliken, and as Bev has written, life went on. Bev attended Nickle School for eight grades and then graduated from Grand Ledge High School. Bev will tell people she worked “here and there”, but she worked for years at Brown Corporation in Ionia and ended her work years at Lear’s Supermarket in Portland. Bev was first married in 1946. She married again in 1951, to Richard (Jack) Dudeck. She loved to talk about the cross-country motorcycle trip she and Jack took for their honeymoon – Jack on the bike and Bev in the sidecar. Jack worked at Portland Products and he tolerated her owl collecting and she went along with his steam engine hobby. They were quite a pair, being married for 40 years, before Jack was called to Glory in 1991. After Jack’s passing, Bev began what she called her “missionary duty”, driving other seniors to various appointments and to her weekly Monday night supper at the Congregational Church. Bev finally sold that bright Gold Mustang a few years ago, but she sure had fun behind the wheel of that car!
Bev loved to travel, doing so in groups or with one or two friends. She kept every ticket, brochure, and souvenir from all of her trips. She loved to go to garage sales, estate sales, and second-hand stores, always on the look-out for owls. She was a prodigious “journaler”, jotting notes every night in a variety of notebooks. She kept company with Walt Sprague until Walt’s death; they would go to lunch or hit the garage sales; anything to share time together. Bev liked to work crossword puzzles, enjoyed puttering in her yard until her mobility lessened, and made sure to send birthday and Christmas cards to the regulars on her list. Bev was honored in 2007 by the Portland Chamber of Commerce as its Outstanding Citizen of the Year for her volunteer efforts. Bev was a long-time member of the Portland Nazarene Church and also enjoyed services at the Portland Congregational Church. While Bev was raised with a knowledge of her adoption, it wasn’t until she was an adult that she was able to reconnect with Billie and Wanda, and after re-establishing this relationship, the three sisters became very close, with Bev visiting both often and hosting Wanda in her home for weeks at a time.
Beverly was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Olga Parker, her loving husband, Jack, and by her three sisters, Marilyn, Billie, and Wanda. She is survived by her niece, Barbara (Steve) Kassel of Orangevale, CA, and by her cousins, Ruth Ann Mellios of Mulliken, Charles Kahle of Portland, and Diana Reneken of Kalamazoo. She is also survived by other second and third cousins connected to the Parker and Dudeck families. Bev is survived by members of the Willemin family – Ellen, Ralph, Mary, Nancy, Steven, Luann, Thomas, and Sherri. In addition, Bev is survived by her Maynard Road neighbors and by everyone she touched in the Portland community by her kindness.
A service will be conducted at Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland at 11:00 am on Friday, February 25, 2022 by Rev. Dr. Marilyn Danielson, with a graveside service to follow for those that wish to attend at Portland Cemetery. Friends may call at Lehman Funeral Home an hour before the service. Bev’s family and friends wish to thank the staff members at Portland Assisted Living and Memory Center for the superb care provided to Bev. For those wishing, donations in memory of Beverly may be made to Heart to Heart Hospice or to the Ionia County Humane Society. On line condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com

He rises up early in the morning, plying the water for that elusive catch, waiting in the stillness for a nibble. A slight twitch in the line, expertly he reels it in. A good fisherman knows a keeper when he sees one, he knows when to toss one back, and when to head for home.

Paul Ray Winegar
March 18, 1926 -- January 25, 2010 (Aged 83)
Birth: Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, USA
Death: Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, USA
Burial: Niles Cemetery
Eagle, Clinton County, Michigan, USA
Paul Ray Winegar, Lansing, born March 18, 1926 in Clinton County, Michigan to the late Edwin and Myrtie Winegar, Paul Winegar passed away after a short illness on January 25, 2010, at the age of 83. He was preceded in his death by his brothers, Donald and William and by his sisters, Nina, Esther and infant Mary. Paul was the devoted husband of Mary Margaret, his first wife who passed away in 1996, and of his second wife, Patricia, who survives him. His love and care for them remains an inspiration for his sons, Ray (Elfreda), Stephen (Gale), and Joseph (Karen Gipson) Winegar; for his daughters-in-law, Michele Winegar and Mary Winegar; and for Patricia's children, Jim (Mirla) Moses, Kathy Hurl and Margaret (Tony) Droste. He was a proud veteran of WWII and Korea, and a member of the Lansing and Portland VFW. He built and successfully managed Paul's Colorama in Lansing until 1970 and retired 25 years later as a real estate broker. His leadership was exemplified by his service of 20 or more years as a member of the board of the Gabriels Credit Union, a volunteer in the Boy Scouts of America for which he received the St. George Award, and as a member of the Resurrection St. Vincent DePaul Society for which he served one term as president. Paul enjoyed a series of outdoor sports including sailing, running, tennis, walking and golf, and he loved the fellowship of those with whom he played. He welcomed all, and was persistently loyal in his relationships. He faced the world with optimism and abiding faith; he ministered to the needs of the young, the old, the sick and the poor. Though he touched us with his tenderness and quiet joy, he sang his hymns right out loud. He is survived in the fond hearts of his grandchildren, Jeff, Paul, (Courtney), Erin, Laura, Thomas, Kathleen, Patrick, Megan and Ben as well as in those of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of his second marriage, Ceclia, Jennifer, Sarah, James Joseph, Brandy, Tish, Tycee, James Anthony, Lamar, Alana, Ciara and Tyler. And he survives in his lifetime example to us that the opportunity to take care of others is every bit as much a gift as is the wide smile feeling of sinking a 12 foot putt for par on a fresh spring day. A Mass of Christian burial will take place Friday, January 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Resurrection. Visitation will be at Gorsline Runciman Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday January 28, 2010. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to Resurrection St. Vincent de Paul Society (1531 E. Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI 48912) or the Alzheimer's Association (P.O Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011).
