Class of 1963
|
This list of the graduates from the Class of 1963 was compiled from the GLHS 50+ Alumni Association yearly listings of who had passed over the last year at each annual reunion year. We are sure there are others we have missed that need to be added to this list. If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

Carol Friedman Lichtenberg
September 16, 1945 -- March 16, 1993 (Aged 47)
Hello classmates, my name is Elliott H. Lichtenberg and I am or was Carol Sue Friedman Lichtenberg’s husband. Prior to 1967 I know very little of her life except that whenever she left Grand Ledge she moved to Chicago and lived with her sister, Joann (Joey), worked, and went to school. At some point she moved to Los Angeles and lived for a while with her mother’s brother, Uncle Ray and
Aunt Sydel. Then in August 1967 she met me and everything changed for both of us forever. Carol Sue lived in LA and I was stationed, I was in the Navy, aboard a submarine repair ship in San Diego; therefore, I would drive up to LA as many weekends as I could get off to see her. By New Years I had orders to
Guam and another ship and I did not want to go alone. So I asked her to marry me.
Nothing with us was ever normal. We gave our parents four weeks to prepare a wedding. Following the wedding, February 11, 1968, I went to Guam and Carol went home while we waited the six months it took for base housing on Guam. During that time Carol was either with her family in Grand Ledge or with my family in Indianapolis. Once I got housing, Carol made the long trip to Guam and that’s where we started our life together. Being that far from home is a great way to start a marriage. You cannot run home to mommy, you cannot just pick up the phone and call mommy (not at $4.00 per minute), its the kind of place that would either strengthen or break a new marriage. We survived an 18 month tour on Guam, by the way Guam is only 30 miles long and 7 miles wide for a total of 205 square miles. It took 3 hours to drive around the perimeter of the island at 35 miles hour. Wen were there from 1968 thru 1970.
From Guam I was transfered to Instructor Duty at the Navy’s Guided Missile School. Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Carol was a stay at home as a housewife until 1971 when she became pregnant. In May 1972 our son David was born. Our tour in Virginia Beach ended in the spring of 1974. During those four years in Virginia Beach Carol ran our home and raised our son, David. From Virginia Beach we were transfered to the Naval Air Station, Memphis, Tenn for training as a management trainer and consultant prior to transfer to the Philippines. Again Carol played housewife. From Memphis, we were off to Human Resource Management Detachment, Subic Bay Naval Base, Republic of the Philippines. This time housing was available almost immediately. The interesting thing about being station in Subic was the hiring of help. Carol hired a housekeeper (a maid), who did everything from cleaning the house, cooking the food, washing the clothing, and caring for our son. She also hired a seamstress, who makes Carol’s clothing (our machine and material); and I hired a gardener (a yard boy), who took care of all of the landscaping. Salaries: maid - $30.00/month plus room and board, the gardener - $3.00/day plus lunch, and the seamstress - $3.00/day plus lunch. Our two year tour was extended to four years in total. During that time Carol worked for the Navy Exchange Retail System in the Security Department. We also had time to take several trip. We traveled twice to Korea and once to Taiwan. These trips were not sightseeing, they were shopping trips. The best statement for any tour to that part of the world “I went broke saving money”. This statement is designed to explain the concept of shopping overseas. You see something in the foreign country, you like it, but you really don’t have the money, and then you realize how much it would cost you back in the real world (USA) and the next thing you know your buying it.
When my tour was finally up we were transfered backed to Virginia Beach, Virginia with a short two month stop in Gulfport, Miss for school first. This time I was changing career, I was becoming a Chaplains Assistant or a church administrator. Once we got to Virginia Beach, I was assigned to the Fleet Chaplain’s Office, the most senior chaplain on the entire east coast and within the entire atlantic fleet. By chain of command. Any chaplain going up the chain its the Fleet Chaplain, the Chief of Chaplains, and the God. Anyway, Carol found work with a temporary employment agency as an agent. She was very good at finding people temporary jobs. She continued to do that work until I decided to retire from the Navy, 20 years was enough. There comes a morning when you wake up and say to yourself I’ve had it and its time to get out. You will also notice that we had only one child, our son David. Early on, we made the decision that we would have only one child if that was all we could afford. We had seen to many friends, in the Navy, that one or two days before payday were eating catsup sandwiches because that was all they could afford. June 30, 1983 ended my Navy career and Carol, David and I packed up and drove to San Diego.
While we were living in the Philippines, Carol’s parents retired, sold Rudy’s and moved to Palm Springs, CA. Unfortunately, Kay did not do well in Palm Springs in the summer, the triple digits did not work. So every summer she and Dad would move to LA or San Diego for the summer. Before long they decided to sell the house in Palm Springs and move to San Diego. They bought a condo in a high rise on Coronado in San Diego in the same building as Orville Redenbacker, the popcorn man.
Carol wanted to live near her parents, as we had never been stationed anywhere near them during the past 15 years. So why not! So off to San Diego we went. Carol’s parents purchased a house which we rented for several years and then purchased. During our first years in San Diego Carol stayed home and spent time with our son, David. They went to the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Sea World, both places having season passes affording them multiple visits. Since David was enrolled in our Temple’s day school Carol would pick him up each day and then many a day they would head over to the Zoo or Sea World for a field trip. Either park was less then 15 minutes from David’s school. After awhile Carol decided to go to work and she found a job at our Temple. Carol became the Admin Assistant to the Associate Rabbi. The Rabbi was a woman which Carol thought was great, sort of fit her feminist attitude. Besides being the admin assistant, Carol was also the Bar Mitzvah Coordinator for the Temple. It was her job to schedule all Bar Mitzvah’s for temple members and to ensure that each child was enrolled in a training program for their Bar Mitzvah. Carol held those positions until 1982, when the Rabbi left the Temple and Carol’s position was eliminated.
Carol stayed home while deciding what to do next when it happened. It was March 16, 1993 and we had just finished dinner when Carol said her back hurt and she was going upstair to lay down. As she walk up the stairs, she collapsed, holding in my arms, David called 911, and I saw her eyes glaze over and her lips turn blue. When the paramedics arrived they had a heartbeat but no pulse. While no one said it, I think she ruptured a artery. I think she died in my arms at home although officially she died at the hospital.
In conclusion Carol Sue Friedman Lichtenberg; born 16 Sept, 1945; died 16 Mar 1993; Born in Grand Ledge, Mich; Died in San Diego, CA; survived by husband: Elli.

Thomas "Mike" Michael Green
December 22, 1944 -- September 25, 2018 (Aged 73)
Thomas “Mike” M. Green, age 73 of Lake, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the North Woods Nursing Center in Farwell. Mike was born the son of Glenn and Shirley (Thomas) Green on December 22, 1944 in Lansing. He faced many health challenges in his early days and continued that fight to the very end of his life, delaying the inevitable as long as he could. In his youth his family spent many summer weekends at the old cabin located near Lake George. On August 5, 1972 he married Nancy Snyder, who predeceased him on December 8, 2009. Mike then was united in marriage to Sue E. Walters on January 4, 2014.
He had worked for MDOT first as a Technician before transitioning over to the Real Estate Division. During the middle of his MDOT career he was instrumental in the establishment of a union to assist his fellow coworkers in their efforts to have better working conditions and more consistent rules. The skills that Mike learned while working for the MDOT Real Estate Division would help him realize his passion for the Real Estate business. Mike moved full time from the Charlotte/Lansing area in 1996. He became a partner and co-owner of Fairchild and Green Real Estate in Lake George that same year; having recently sold his business in December of 2017.
Mike had a competitive spirit and strived to be the best at any of his endeavors, whether working, hunting, fishing, playing softball, golfing or just plain playing. He loved playing cards, especially Euchre and Cribbage. He enjoyed the hunting excursions usually at the family’s property near Lake George with his late cousin Roger and his cousin Dave, brother James and everyone else that wanted to tag along. During one of those excursions while helping his father to his shanty, Mike’s dad Glenn was stricken with a massive heart attack. Although Mike tried desperately to save him, Glenn was beyond help according to the Doctors. Following his father’s passing Mike was solidly devoted to his mother. He would call her almost every day and frequently stop in to check on her to see if she needed anything.
Mike was very civic minded and gave of his time and talents to the Lincoln Twp. Fire Department. He served on the Fire Department for 2000 to 2010, having risen in the department to become a Lieutenant and Training Officer. Mike enjoyed traveling; he and Sue enjoyed visiting Florida as often as they could. Mike will be remembered most for his never give up attitude.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; son Douglas (Jenny) Green of Battle Creek; his mother Shirley Green of Charlotte; a brother James (Susan Anderson) Green of Grand Ledge; his grandchildren Brendan and Kailin. Also surviving are Douglas’ mother, Sherry Ritchie Green of Bellevue; Sue’s daughter Kelly (Eric) Cotton and their sons Avery and Evan of Clare and a step nephew Jacob (Sarah) Walters of Indianapolis, Indiana.

August 19, 1945 -- February 21, 2001 (Aged 55)
Ron was a 31-1/2 year employee of General Motors. He loved his work and all the opportunities for change and learning it provided. His last position was as a Senior Consultant in Organizational Employee Development (OED) with the Metal Fabricating Division in Troy. His Credo exemplifies his simple but strong feelings about life and what was truly important. Ron’s wonderful warmth and infectious sense of humor was a gift he gave to his family, friends and colleagues.
Grand Ledge held a special place in Ron’s heart. He told funny, touching stories of growing up in a rural setting with both farm and suburban experiences. Hard work ethic, being results focused, and the law of the harvest were all learned first hand. He loved his high school years, lessons learned, sports and extra-curricular activities, memorable teachers and lasting friendships. He felt these were the events and people that nurtured the qualities in himself that would make him a success in his career and in his personal relationships.
Ron believed in giving back to his community in any way possible. He served as a Lansing Area Junior Achievement Advisor, volunteered as a director and coach with the Capital Area Soccer Club, served on several area Credit Union Board of Directors and was a literacy tutor through the Macomb Literacy Project of Macomb County.
His spirit was one to be envied and emulated and many came away richer for having contact with him. He lives in the hearts of many and they carry part of him with them forever.
Ron is survived by his wife Sandra Thomas-Warner, Ed.D., retired educator and school administrator; his son, Dr. Ryan Warner, a graduate of NYU Dental School and practicing dentist in Largo, Florida; his brother, Roger, sister-in-law, Sandy of Grand Ledge; niece Kalli, and nephew, Shey of Waverly. His brother Ralph is a resident of the Howe Home in Holt, MI.
