If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

Dr. Sally A. Etter Turner
October 30, 1934 — April 24, 2022 (Aged 87)
Dr. Sally A. Turner. Born October 30, 1934 - April 24, 2022 at 87 years old.
Beloved mother, aunt, grandmother, community leader, excellent friend and retired veterinarian, Sally Ann Turner, left us after a fierce battle against dementia. On Easter Sunday 2022 Sally had a massive stroke and entered hospice care shortly after.
Sally was born to Charles and Mary (Olmstead) Etter in South Bend, Indiana. She moved with her family to various places in MI. During World War II, she and her parents lived in Owosso, Michigan and her father worked in an airplane factory there. Her father's heart was in farming and she moved to Perry, Michigan and then graduated high school from Grand Ledge, Michigan. Sally started young with a love of animals, she showed horses, ponies and cows in 4-H. She decided she wanted to be either a Latin teacher or a veterinarian. She was told not to bother to apply for vet school at MSU since she was a female but she didn't let that stop her. Her tenacity served her well in that area and she graduated in a class with 3 other female students in 1958. As one of her friends said "She was relentless in finding a way to get something done when faced with a challenge."
Sally met and married Donald G. Turner at MSU and they had 3 children; David, Steven and Mary. Together they founded Turner Veterinary Clinic. Sally's resilience came through for her over and over in her life. She survived the death of her oldest son when he was 14 years old and later a divorce. She took over the clinic in 1982 and continued practicing until she sold the practice to Dr. Benjamin Huelsbergen in 1998. Dr. Turner loved being a veterinarian and it gave such meaning to her life. She was at her best when dealing with a beloved pet's last moments and many people remember her for this, years after she retired. Sally was a great mentor to other veterinarians as well, always willing to share her knowledge. She was generous with her time and involved in many activities: Such as, various veterinary practice committees; Cub Scouts and Campfire girls; the Battle Creek Public School Board as President; Leila Arboretum and she was instrumental in keeping Kingman Museum alive. She loved the community of Battle Creek. Sally loved gardening and would start planning with seed catalogs around February every year.
Many will remember Sally was an excellent cook and hostess. So many BCCHS marching band parties, Tree Trimming parties and smaller dinner parties. She was known for her cheesecake and her chocolate goat's milk ice cream that was served at the Turner, Stroud, Mumford, Murphy, July 4th picnics. She also was a lover of children, she loved reading aloud to them. Sally doted on her Grandson Mitchell Turner; they shared a love of fishing. Many children called her "Grandma" Chris and Katie Sellers among others. Many knew her as "Aunt Sally" and she loved to give gifts, from cinnamon rolls to Christmas cookie trays that she started in October. She was up for anything and at the age of 81 drove a Segway through the streets of Sarasota Florida - at a snail's pace but she did it!
Friends will be received 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2022 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where a memorial service to celebrate Sally's life will be officiated by Pastor Chad Parmalee. The service will be livestreamed and may be viewed at: https://vimeo.com/703261296

Dr. James Michael "Jerry" Fortino, M.D.
DATE OF PASSING: April 18, 2023 (Aged 89)
Dr. James 'Jerry' Michael Fortino MD passed away peacefully on April 18, 2023 at home with his beloved wife, Carolyn, by his side. Jerry lived to be 89, or "minus 11" per his vernacular for having the plan to live to be 100. While he didn't quite reach his goal age, he certainly packed one hundred years worth of joy and adventure into his life. Jerry was born in Lansing, Michigan to Pasquale and Carolyn Fortino and grew up in nearby Grand Ledge. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame and then earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his internship and pediatric residency at Charity Hospital where he fell in love with New Orleans as well as a young nursing student named Carolyn Malone. Together Jerry and Carolyn opened Children's Clinic in Gretna, LA where he practiced pediatrics for over fifty years. He cared deeply for the families he treated, and they adored him in turn. Patients frequently spotted Dr. Jerry around town and were always thrilled to see him. He reluctantly retired at the age of 85. A long-time Rotarian, Dr. Fortino served as the Governor of District 6840 of Rotary International and spearheaded many impactful causes. After Hurricane Katrina left the great city of New Orleans in disarray, Jerry launched the restoration of City Park's main entrance and grounds in 2006. Not only his district, but many districts from around the country and the world, were recruited by Jerry to help restore this historic part of New Orleans. One of his recruits, a Rotary Club from New York, replaced all the lost band uniforms for Warren Easton High School. While Jerry was humble, his family would like to note that he was the recipient of the following awards and accolades: 53 Years of Service to West Jefferson Medical Center; three of Rotary's prestigious awards - "Service Above Self," "Citation for Meritorious Service," and "International Service;" and the 2008 Peoples Health Champion Award, for which he was congratulated by the governor of Louisiana during half time at a game for his favorite team, the New Orleans Saints. Jerry was a true renaissance man and appreciated the art and culture of the many places he visited around the world. He was a trustee of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and he was honored to donate many of his favorite treasures to their collection. He was also a talented dancer and gardener. Above all, Jerry was a devoted family man. He was affectionately referred to as "PaPa" by his grandchildren. PaPa's energy and jokester spirit were his hallmark. He was known to take hide-and-seek with his children to a new level. Jerry was frequently undefeated at dominos, although he was often suspected of "foul play." He will always be remembered as a loving and generous husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, doctor, philanthropist, and friend. Jerry is predeceased by his parents, Pasquale and Carolyn Fortino, and his brothers, Louie and Peter Fortino. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Carolyn Malone Fortino; his sister, Helen (Caruso); children, Leah Ragiel (Steve), John Fortino, Andrea Taulli (David), Gianna Tarantino (Gerard); brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces and nephews; ten incredibly talented and cherished grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. The family would like to thank those that helped care for Jerry over the years, especially Donald Wortmann, the late Selena Pugh, all his doctors and nurses and Heart of Hospice. We are forever grateful for their excellent care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Ogden Museum of Southern Art by emailing [email protected] or by calling 504-539-9616 or to TheRotaryFoundation,Rotary.org. Please specify that contributions go towards Polio Plus, which pays for polio vaccines, in honor of Jerry Fortino on the donation form. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 23rd at Mothe Funeral Home, 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA 70058. A visitation will begin at 11 am, followed by a 1 pm service.
