Class of 1961
|
This list of the graduates from the Class of 1961 was compiled from the GLHS 50+ Alumni Association yearly listings of who had passed over the last year at each annual reunion year. We are sure there are others we have missed that need to be added to this list. If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

Duken "Duke" Earl Cole
March 19, 1943 — June 2, 2023 (Aged 80)
Duken “Duke” Earl Cole, 80, of Lansing, Michigan graduated to heaven and began his walk to Jesus while in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family June 2, 2023. A lifetime Lansing area resident, Duke was born March 19, 1943 in Lansing, Michigan. He attended and graduated from Grand Ledge High School and went on to attend Lansing Community College, as well as Michigan State University, before completing his electrician’s apprenticeship. In March of 1963 he married his sweetheart, Ellen, this year they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Duke was a dedicated maintenance electrician for Oldsmobile in the Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac division. Every hunting season Duke could be found out in his deer blind. Hunting was a big part of Duke’s life, he was fortunate enough to get his first deer at the age of 16 however, he didn’t get his second deer until he was 79, with nothing in between. For Duke it wasn’t about getting a deer it was about his time spent sitting in the woods, enjoying the beauty of nature that God created. Duke was quite the collector and found joy adding to his collections. Above all else he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, family, and friends. Those that knew him would tell you he was a fiercely loyal man. He was known for his amazing sense of humor, phenomenal memory, and great story telling abilities. Duke never met a stranger, his kindness and compassion made others feel welcome and at ease. If you ever asked Duke how he was doing, chances where he would respond with his usual “I’m just peachy.” He was an extremely honest and trustworthy person who will be missed greatly.
Duke is preceded in death by his parents, Earl Arthur Cole Jr., Lillian Arleen Schafer-Cole-Gehlhaar, and Fred Gehlhaar. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ellen Rae Cole; children, Timothy (Mary Beth) Cole, Christina Cole, Jeremiah (Michelle) Cole, Daniel (Melissa) Cole; grandchildren: Erica (Dell) Porter, Isaiah Cole, Reece Cole, Jessica Cole, Zachariah Cole, Emily Cole, Micah Cole, Justin Cole, Marisa Cole; great-grandchild, Travis James Porter; siblings, Linda (Richard) Hammerberg, Karen (Manuel) Ibarra, Terre Gehlhaar, Tom (Jean) Hurshman, Dorothy (Stew) McDonald; several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, many friends and friends that were called family.

Clyde worked as a team leader at General Motors until his retirement. Clyde cherished his wife of 46 years, Sharon Fedewa Hoerner, his family, and God. He was known for his sense of humor, his kind heart, and gift of gab. He made pancakes for the grand dogs whenever they visited.
