Class of 1951
This list of the graduates from the Class of 1951 was compiled from the GLHS 50+ Alumni Association yearly listings of who had passed over the last year at each annual reunion year. We are sure there are others we have missed that need to be added to this list. If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

Jacqueline Leona Abbruzzese Bratschi
August 8, 1933 - March 26, 2020 (Aged 86)
Jacqueline L. Bratschi, 86, went home to be with the Lord on March 26, 2020, after an abundant and fulfilling life.
Jacqueline was born on July 8, 1933 in Ionia, Michigan, daughter to Joseph and Florence (Tully) Abbruzzese. She is survived by her son Raymond “Chris” Bratschi, daughters Mary (Gordon) VanWieren and Marcia (Mike) Gresens, and her four grandchildren: Betsy and Trey VanWieren, and Gunnar and Sabrina Gresens. She was predeceased by Raymond, her husband of 59 years, as well as her five brothers and three sisters.
Jacqueline had an inherent talent for organization, as well as an eye for elegance. She used those skills to manage and improve many properties through the years - some properties for work, and some for play. Jacqueline was also a Managing Partner of Bratschi Enterprises, Inc., a property management company she founded with her husband and son. But the family home in Oneida Township, which she and her husband built, and where she lived until July 2019, was her love. She enjoyed mowing her three acre lawn without assistance until she was 85 years old, and even then was reluctant to relinquish that chore.
Jacqueline was an active parishioner at St. Michael Catholic Church in Grand Ledge, including being a member of Prayer Partners with the children at St. Michael Church. She was a former Treasurer for Oneida Township, and also volunteered on the Township’s Election Board.
Jacqueline’s favorite thing in life was spending quality time with family, especially her grandchildren, and her friends. She enjoyed crafting, painting, and playing euchre with her friends from church. Jacqueline always looked forward to family gatherings and vacations. Preparing for such gatherings was a labor of love for her, especially when the preparations involved assistance from her children and grandchildren. Sharing her talents, like her ability to make a perfect pumpkin chiffon pie, with her family was always a priority.
Vacations were always important to her. They typically included family members, extended family, and good friends. An early vacation involved a cross country trip with her three sisters and mother in a convertible to visit her brother in California. Other family trips consisted of camping and canoeing across the country - New York, Maine, Florida, and Mississippi. Later in life she and Ray fell in love with Charlevoix, Michigan. They made it their family vacation destination of choice. They enjoyed traveling up north numerous times each summer to the family compound to enjoy the peaceful quiet waters of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan with their children, grandchildren, and friends.
Jacqueline’s sparkle and enthusiasm for life would light up the room when she entered. Always quick with a smile, or a hand to help, she had an infectious laugh that brought easy smiles to everyone. She was an inspirational role model, amazing wife, tireless mother, loving daughter, and devoted friend. Jacqueline lived a full life simply dedicated to love and generosity. She will forever remain in our hearts.
A private family service will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Grand Ledge.neral Home, Grand Ledge. Online condolences may be shared at www.petersandmurrayfuneralhome.com.

Joan "Jo" Mary Barker Wolverton
March 17, 1933 — June 23, 2023 (Aged 90)
With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Joan Mary Barker, born on 17 March 1933 in Lake Odessa, Michigan, to John Barker and Audrey Hansbarger. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on 23 June 2023 at her residence in Niceville, Florida.
Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bruce Wolverton, and her brother Jerry Barker. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Debra and Mark Mintz and son and daughter-in-law John and Gwen Wolverton, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
She attended Grand Ledge High School in Michigan, graduating in June 1951. Then on 18 June 1953, Jo married Bruce in Belding, Michigan, and joined him at Fort Benning, Georgia, for the remainder of his US Army enlistment. After Bruce completed his tour of duty, Jo and Bruce moved to Ionia, Michigan, in 1955. There Jo worked for the Ionia Chamber of Commerce until 1975. In 1975 Jo and Bruce ventured off to Phoenix, Arizona. In 1979 they returned to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to care for their aging parents. At that time, Jo accepted an executive security position at the Harley Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she worked until her retirement in 1996. Jo and Bruce then retired and moved to Niceville, Florida.
Jo was an active member of Crosspoint Church of Niceville, Florida, and worked as a volunteer at the Niceville Public Library. Her enthusiasm for art could be seen through her many creations - she painted characters on a large group of items, including shirts, cards, rocks, and step stools for her grandchildren.
A private funeral service will be held at a later date keeping with Jo's wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association at https://www.alz.org/. The family would like to offer special thanks to Superior Residences of Niceville and Emerald Coast Hospice for their loving care during this difficult time.
Joan will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend who always put others before herself while enjoying life's simple things - often with a brush in hand, creating lasting memories through her artistic talents. Her absence will leave a hole in all our hearts forevermore; however, we all can take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with those she loved who have gone before her.

Mary P. Bonofiglio Ezzo
September 5, 1932 — December 23, 2022 (Aged 90)
Mary P. Ezzo, 90, of Lansing, MI, went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 23rd, 2022. Born as Maria Ippolita Bonofiglio in 1932 in Borgo Partenope, a small mountain village in Italy’s Calabrese region, she was the daughter of Giuseppe (Joseph) and Elvira (née Coscarelli). In 1936, Mary, her siblings, and parents immigrated to the United States, passing through Ellis Island and settling near family in Grand Ledge, MI.
Despite starting her schooling speaking only Italian, she became an excellent student and was a popular member of her class at Grand Ledge High. She participated in a myriad of clubs and activities, serving as Student Council Secretary her Senior Year. She graduated as a member of the class of 1951.
Mary’s Senior Page Prophecy saw her as “an Office worker at some big company”, and this became a prophecy fulfilled! She worked in the office of Knapp’s department store downtown and for the state of Michigan in its escheats department. After meeting Jon Carmen (Jack) Ezzo at a picnic, Mary’s love of family sent her on a different path. They were married on July 10th, 1954. The couple settled on Hayford Street in Lansing, MI, where they were shortly joined by children Lawrence (Lynne), Stephen (Michelle), Catherine (Larry), Jon Jr. (Liz), Rosemary (Jeffrey), Ann (Gary), & Mary Jo.
Between bringing up their children, Mass and committees at the Church of the Resurrection, and summers at Blue Gill Lake, Mary and Jack found success in various business ventures—from real estate to restaurants and beyond. Out of a surfeit of accomplishments, however, their most rewarding was their family.
Mary is predeceased by her parents; siblings; granddaughter Rebecca Sernick; son-in-law Bart Wegenke; and her husband of 66 years, Jack. She is survived by two brothers, seven children, 13 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
A talented gardener, avid reader, devout Catholic, and the best cook in the family, Mary possessed a classic beauty her entire life, but will be most remembered for her defining trait of a genuine, bone-deep kindness. Her gentle nature and friendly humor are blessings sorely missed and lessons gratefully remembered.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Thursday December 29th, 2022, at the Church of the Resurrection1505 E Michigan Ave, Lansing MI 48912 with a visitation one hour prior. For those wishing, memorial donations may be made to Church of the Resurrection in memory of Mary Ezzo. The family has entrusted arrangements to Mills Funeral Home, Peters & Murray Chapel, Grand Ledge. Online condolences may be shared at www.millsfuneral.com.

Kenneth Dukes Cooper
October 29, 1931 -- March 29, 1951 (Aged 18)
Birth: Grand Ledge, Eaton County, Michigan, USA
Death: Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, USA
Burial: Oakwood Cemetery
Grand Ledge, Eaton County, Michigan
Kenneth Cooper, age 18, of Route No. 1, Grand Ledge, was killed and William Sedelmaier, age 17, of 231 E. River St. was critically injured, in an automobile crash here last Thursday evening. The accident involved three cars, but no one else was injured and the cars suffered only slight damage. But for a door in the Sedelmaier car flying open, it is possible that no one would have been injured. The drivers of the three cars involved were Norman W. Sedelmaier, 212 Harrison; Richard Bigford, 622 W. Main; and Roger A. Bell, Route No. 1, Grand Ledge. Bigford, driving a Ford, was traveling east on W. Jefferson, and he came over the hill near the entrance of Fitzgerald park, saw a tractor in front of him and he slowed down to follow it. Sedelmaier was following Bigford, Coming over the hill, he saw Bigford's car and the tractor, and braked to keep behind them. His car skidded, however, and hit the left rear of the Bigford auto. At or near the moment of impact, the door on the right side of the Sedelmaier car popped open, and Cooper and Bill Sedelmaier, who were riding in the front seat with the driver, were thrown out.
They landed on the pavement directly in front of an oncoming car driven by Bell. Going west, Bell was only 10 feet in front of the boys when they hit the pavement and could not stop his car in time to avoid them. The car hit both boys. They were taken to St. Lawrence hospital in Lansing by the Teman and Peters ambulances. Cooper was pronounced dead on arrival, from a fractured skull, and internal injuries. Sedelmaier was reported in serious condition Monday afternoon by hospital authorities. He suffered severe scalp lacerations, a fractured left shoulder, concussion and a possible skull fracture and internal injuries.
Cooper was born in Grand Ledge, October 29, 1932 and had lived his entire life here. He was a senior in the local high school and a member of the National Guard.
