Class of 1958
This list of the graduates from the Class of 1958 was compiled from the GLHS 50+ Alumni Association yearly listings of who had passed over the last year at each annual reunion year. We are sure there are others we have missed that need to be added to this list. If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

Larry began working for Publix Supermarkets in 1960 starting in the Lakeland Warehouse. He retired from Publix as Store Manager in Gainesville Florida in 1999 after a thirty-nine year career. Larry loved working for Publix and was easily spotted in the Supermarket by listening for the sound of his whistling. He loved his customers and staff and made many great friendships over the years.
Larry’s passion outside of his family was fishing the many lakes in Central Florida. An avid bass fisherman, he loved sharing this passion with friends and family throughout his lifetime. He was a champion for the little guy and the down and out and was always quick to lend a hand to those in need without ever needing recognition for his good deeds. He had a great sense of humor, and if you found yourself on the sharp end of one of his practical jokes it was because he loved you.
If you happen to have sat in the balcony of First Baptist Church of Leesburg he attended, you might have noticed him wiping his eyes which were full of tears when the hymns were sung....the music spoke volumes to his heart every Sunday, and he always carried extra tissues as he always felt God’s presence in a special way.
Larry had been battling health issues for a number of years and finally succumbed to a heart attack. Nevertheless, he always kept a positive attitude and did his best with the cards he was dealt. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Gordon Leo "Flash" Shepard
March 9, 1940 -- November 19, 2019 (Aged 79)
Gordon Leo “Flash” Shepard passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at his home in Petoskey, Michigan. He was 79 years old. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rita Gasco Shepard in 2008. He is survived by his daughters Carrie (Tony) Kerns; Michelle (Peter) Hernek, parents of Stephen, Robert, Sergei, and Jenah; and son, Gordon (Angela) Shepard II, parents of Madison, Kaitlyn and Gordon, III. Also surviving are sisters Sally Page and Rebecca Shepard Fenrick, brother Bill Shepard, and Rita's children Vicki (Chris) Lynn, Regina (Brian) Carver, Stella (Dave) Kay and Harvey Brubaker, as well as several grand and great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Flash was preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings, Nancy, Tuff and Jim.
Gordon was born on March 9th, 1940 in Owosso, Michigan and was one of seven children of Marion and Lola (Koivuniemi) Shepard. He grew up in Grand Ledge, Michigan and graduated from GLHS in 1958. After graduation he joined the Navy and flew missions as a submarine spotter. He served tours of duty in Hawaii, Japan and Key West.
After leaving the Navy, Gordon went to work for Dudley Paper Company, later Copco Paper, and Unisource until he retired. If you were a customer, you could set your calendar to his route schedule. He traveled up and down the State of Michigan and had the same customers over his forty plus years before his retirement.
Flash loved motorcycles and loved taking trips on his road bike. In 1981, Gordon renamed himself “Flash Gordon” after surviving being struck by lightning while driving his motorcycle on I-75 after his Finnish family reunion in the U.P. Flash was like a cat with nine lives. He kept beating the odds. He was SISU. A doctor in a car that was following him administered first aid, and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. The lightning actually improved his eyesight. He was told he couldn't play golf for the rest of the year because he had to stay out of the sun. Possessed of a delightful quirkiness and more than enough ingenuity, and not one to let anything interfere with his golf game – he lived and breathed golf – he bought himself a good covering beach umbrella and played on.
Seems like golf was always a connector. He met the love of his life, Rita Gasco Brubaker in 1991 and they later married. Their first blind date was as partners in a charity golf tournament in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Perfect. What could be better? They fulfilled each other's needs, were both bargain shoppers, and best of all, Rita was a really good golfer. They played golf as much as possible, and she beat him as much as possible. They had a small miniature doberman named Duke, and he was often seen on the golf course in St. Ignace running the fairways and chasing the geese away. Duke became Flash's connection to Rita after her death from cancer in 2008. You never saw Flash on the golf course without Duke walking with him or riding in the cart.
Flash was a bird lover. He prided himself in being "the bird man" of Petoskey. He had a balcony loaded with bird feeders, bird houses, tons of seed, and devices to chase away the squirrels while his birds were hanging out. He had five bird clocks that tweeted the quarter hour, half hour and hour. All different bird calls, and he knew them all.
As a widower, Flash kept very busy doing volunteer work of all kinds. He loved people, and they loved him. A greeting always required a hug. He volunteered at the Friendship Center in Petoskey, delivered blood all over the State of Michigan for the Red Cross, and drove the Elder's bus for the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. He was a recycler. He kept any highway he drove clean by picking up bottles and cans that people threw out of their cars.
The word quirkiness describes Flash and his many wonderful idiosyncrasies. A flyswatter was always within reach. This inspired his daughter to present him with a unique flyswatter bouquet for Father's day. He was loved by anyone who knew him. He was mostly a man of few words, but if compelled, the expletives would give George Carlin a run for his money.
Food: He loved pasties, he was a Finn, but his greatest love was …... peanut butter. He ate it on everything. He kept an emergency jar in his car in case he was having dinner where there might not be PB for his hamburger, or even his ice cream for dessert. It was for Flash that the peanut butter lappan, a Hungarian dessert was invented. Apple lappan, blueberry lappan, cherry lappan – and now peanut butter lappan.
He will be missed by many people whose lives were made better by knowing him. Rest in Peace, Flash. Charitable donations in memory of Flash are asked to please be directed to the Harbor Hall Treatment Center in Petoskey.

Marta Jean (Swanson) Giesecke, 78, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2018, with family by her side. She was born June 8, 1940, in Grand Ledge, Michigan, the daughter of Stanley and Doris (Smith) Swanson and grew up in Grand Ledge surrounded by a large and loving extended family. As a child, she was active in their church, Girl Scouts, was a GLHS cheerleader, and loved spending time at the family farm in Morley, Michigan. She had many adventures with her two sisters and The Swanson Girls remained close throughout their lives. She married John R. “Jack” Giesecke on April 27, 1968, and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He survives her.
Marta held a variety of jobs throughout her life, including at the First Congregational Church, Bee’s Chevy Olds, and Beck’s Orchard. However, she considered her most important roles to be wife, homemaker, and mother. She delighted in raising their three children and was a faithful supporter at band concerts, Sea Lions meets, various sporting events, and a myriad of other activities that the kids enjoyed over the years. She opened their home to swim team dinners, Lions Band events, slumber parties, and family celebrations. As grandchildren arrived, she took equal joy in watching them grow and participate in various activities, earn good grades, and often said how proud she was that they were “such nice kids.” She was very supportive of Jack’s business, The Stereo Shoppe, and hosted many store parties, both at Christmas and in the summer.
She loved summer vacations at family cottages on Morrison Lake in Michigan and on Big Sand Lake in Wisconsin. These were great places for making family memories, the love of which has been passed to her children and grandchildren. Avid Spartan fans, she and Jack held season tickets for MSU football and basketball for 40+ years and many great times were had cheering on the Spartans and following them to Tournament games. Marta loved adventure and she and Jack enjoyed traveling, trying new restaurants, piling the family into the station wagon for Sunday drives, and organizing friends for a fun night out.
She was an avid gardener and loved tending to her flowers. She was active in the Mint Country Garden Club and served as past President, was a co-founder of the Mint City Investment Club, and past President of the St. Johns Women’s Club. Marta especially loved to decorate their old Victorian home on State Street, taking special joy in doing so at Christmas-time. She and Jack enjoyed auctions and collecting antiques and she refinished many pieces which were used to furnish their home. She always had a project and could often be found quilting, wallpapering, painting, making her famous chocolate chip cookies, and working hard to make their house a home. She loved to read; the kitchen lights were always on, and the coffee was always ready.
Even with all of these activities, Marta will be most remembered for her love of family and friends, her strong faith, easy laugh, happy disposition, and always optimistic outlook. She was there for anyone who needed her and her glass was always “full.” She could chat easily with all kinds of people and made friends wherever she went. In recent years, as her health declined, she handled the transition with her usual grace and good humor.
In addition to her husband Jack, surviving Marta are her children, Jennifer (Jim) Beagle of St. Johns, Michigan; Michael (Laura) Giesecke of Scottsdale, Arizona; and Betsy (Brandon) Chaffee of Granville, Ohio.
