Dorothy J. Baker McDaniels
April 7, 1928 -- May 19, 2018
Dorothy J. Baker McDaniels, lifelong Grand Ledge resident passed away May 19, 2018. Dorothy was born April 7, 1928 in Lansing, Michigan to the late Orla S. and Jane (Shady) Baker. She was a beloved mom, grandma, great-grandma, sister and friend whose generosity and compassion will be missed by the many lives she touched. Dorothy graduated from Grand Ledge High School Class of 1946 and went on to work for GTE, retiring as a Supervisor in 1982. Dorothy was actively involved at the GL First Congregational Church and enjoyed playing bingo, going to the casino and baking Christmas cookies for her family every year. Dorothy also looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren and had a special relationship with her granddaughters. The family has many fond memories of spending time together at Derby Lake where Dorothy worked very hard to make their time at the lake very special.
She is survived by 4 children: Nan Roth, Diane McDaniels, Tom and Doug (Deb); 8 grandchildren: Jennifer, Ben, Jamie, Matt, Scott, Missy, Mandy and Steve; 16 great grandchildren: Alayna and Keira; Julian, Mason, Evan, Stella and Henry; Makenzie, Logan and Lukas; Jacob and Zachary; Lilly, Cole, Braeden and Sydney with 1 great grandchild on the way; 3 sisters: Lorraine Teman, Janet Hawes and Linda Galvin along with sister-in-law, Beverly Baker. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry in 2010 and siblings; Marilyn McAllister, Beverly Greiner and Roger Baker.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday May 23, 2018, 11a.m. at the Holihan-Atkin-Barclay Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:30-11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The family would also like to thank the staff of Eaton County Health & Rehabilitation Services for the wonderful care and support they provided for Dorothy, with a special thank you to Danielle. Memorial contributions may be given to St. Michael Catholic Church, 345 Edwards Street, Grand Ledge, Michigan 48837.

Ernest Jerry Barker
April 16, 1928 -- August 18, 2020 (Aged 92)
E. Jerry Barker of Port Charlotte, formally of Grand Ledge, MI, passed away quietly on August 18, 2020 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte, Florida.
Jerry was born on April 16, 1928 to the late John and Audrey (Hansbarger) Barker in Lake Odessa, Michigan.
He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1946.
Jerry worked for the State of Michigan, before retiring from General Motors after 31 years as a General Supervisor for the Fisher Body Division.
Jerry was a member of the Port Charlotte Village Board of Directors for 8 years, helping to rebuild the park after hurricane Charley in 2004.
Jerry enjoyed playing golf and spending Saturdays watching his favorite college football team Michigan State. Jerry was a member of the Pilgrim United Church of Christ.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 20 years, Reba Myers Barker of Port Charlotte, his Son’s Richard (Sue) Barker, Lawrence (Julie) Barker, James (Tammie) Barker, and Daughter-In-Law Elizabeth Barker, his Step-Children Kenneth (Susan) Myers, Timothy (Mary Lu) Myers, Bruce Myers, Nancy (Dana Hess) Myers, Keith (Jacob Campbell) Myers, Ruth Ann (Steven) Hall, 7 Grandchildren and 10 Step-Grandchildren. Jerry and Reba also shared a love of their 26 Great-Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild. Jerry is also survived by a Sister Joan Wolverton, and Sister-In-Law Pat (David) Upton, 6 nieces, and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 48 years Shirley (Garris) Barker in 1997, and his oldest son Donald Barker in 2012.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date due to the coronavirus.

Harley Lee Barnes
July 10, 1926 — June 5, 2022 (Aged 95)
Harley Lee Barnes born July 10, 1926 passed away on June 5, 2022 at the age of 95. To know him was to love him. Harley Barnes left this earth peacefully at Regency at Lansing West, which had been his residence since March of 2019.
He was born to Neva and LeRoy Barnes at their family farm on Grange road in Grand Ledge. He continued life on that same road even after his marriage to the love of his life, Norma (Thomas) Barnes in 1951.
Harley worked as a farmer, bus driver, and was a State of Michigan Highway Department employee for 26 years.
Even after he was diagnosed with IBM (a form of muscular dystrophy) he never complained and could always be found with a smile on his face. He was a hero to his three children, and was always that dad who could do anything.
Harley was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Norma (2017) and his son, Greg (2020), sisters Izetta Lawson and Ellen McCormack. He was the last living member of his immediate family. He leaves behind his daughter Debra (Bill) Hansbarger and his son Randy (Penny) Barnes. Grandkids and great grandkids were his absolute joy. He was very close with many nieces and nephews of three generations. Many close friends and his best friends Bob and Ilene Shaw (Ilene passed away in 2021) were a large part of his life and he will be missed by all.
A funeral service will be held Friday, June 10, 2022 – 11:00 a.m. at Mills Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, and visitation will be one hour prior to the service; interment to be at Union Cemetery. Visitation will also be held Thursday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in loving memory of Harley to the Ever Ready Club, 15980 Jones Rd, Grand Ledge, MI 48837 or the Eaton County Fair, 1025 S. Barbara Ruth Bever Pittenger

Barbara Ruth Pittenger, age 89, of Charlotte, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at Eaton County Health and Rehabilitation Services in Charlotte. She was born October 22, 1928, in Lansing, the daughter of Clifford and Marion (Gearhart) Bever. Barb grew up on the family farm in Grand Ledge. She graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1946. Barb was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She adored her grandchildren and cherished every opportunity she had to spend together with them. Throughout her life Barb enjoyed listening to Big Band music and flowers. In later years she enjoyed her job at the Charlotte Walmart where she worked as a greeter.
Barb is survived by her children: Doug (Julie) Murray of Louisa, KY, Sharon (Gary) Russell of Nashville, MI, Ann (Jim) LeMay of DeWitt; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; and 2 brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 29, 2018, at 1 P.M. at the Burkhead-Green-Kilgo Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-7 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at West Carmel Cemetery.

Oliver V. Bush
July 21, 1928 -- February 18, 2010 (Aged 81)
Oliver V. Bush, 81, of Nashville, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2010 peacefully at Pennock Hospital in Hastings. Oliver was born in Grand Ledge on July 21, 1928, the son of the late James and Esther (Shance) Bush. He was raised in the Grand Ledge area and attended local schools graduating from Grand Ledge High School in 1946. He was the husband of Betty (McGill) Bush. The couple was married at the Grand Ledge Methodist Church on Nov. 1, 1963. They made their home in the Grand Ledge area where they raised their family together. After retiring, Oliver and Betty relocated to the Nashville area to be closer to their church community at Nashville Baptist Burch. Oliver and Betty have been married for over 46 years.
Oliver was employed as an auto body repairman for the State of Michigan for over 17 years and later as a claims adjuster with Farm Bureau Insurance before retiring in 1996. Throughout the years, Oliver owned his own body shop and has done work for several area body shops in the Grand Ledge area. Body shops would often rely on Oliver’s expertise and years of experience when complicated and difficult repairs were necessary.
Even in his spare time Oliver was building something. He enjoyed building different types of boats, and even built his own airplane. The airplane build was a success despite reaching an altitude of only eight feet before landing. It was Oliver’s attention to detail that set him apart as a true craftsman. When Olivet wasn’t working on a project, he and Betty loved going camping and to travel. Over the years, the couple has traveled over all the United States and enjoyed a cruise in the Hawaiian Islands.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Maynard; his sisters, Lottie, Gloria; and two infant brothers that died at birth.
Oliver is survived by his daughter, Shelley (Vance) Higdon; two sons, Gary (Carol) Bush, Terry (Cheryl) Bush; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Nashville Baptist Church Monday Feb. 22, with Lester DeGroot officiating.

Gayle Earl Edwards, 86, of Natchez, died Friday, May 23, 2014 at Magnolia House, funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Flach officiating.
Burial will follow at the Natchez National Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at the funeral home.
Mr. Edwards was born September 19, 1927 in Grand Ledge, MI, the son of Earl and Lila Edwards. He was a sergeant in the Korean War, where he enlisted after high school. He served as county president of the Cattleman Association. He was on the Board of Directors and Commissioner of the Natchez Dixie Youth Baseball and a 4-H Leader, where he enjoyed following the youth of the area excel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and mother of his children, Ellen Blanchard Edwards, and his second wife, Sue Riley Edwards.
He is survived by four children: Mary Lees Edwards Wilson, Gary Edwards and wife, Jeanne, Duke Edwards and wife, Paula, and Gigi Edwards Johnson; four grandchildren: Stephen Edwards and wife, Mary-Margaret, Caroline Hinson and husband, Murphy, Justin Johnson and wife, Melissa, and Preston Edwards; two great grandchildren: Houston and Annie Edwards.
Pallbearers will be Stephen Edwards, Justin Johnson, Preston Edwards, Murphy Hinson, Van Voss and Sylvester Harris.
Honorary pallbearers will be the friends of his hunting fraternity.
Following the service, there will be a repast at Pinecrest Plantation, the family home.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Magnolia House and Camellia Hospice and all caregivers.
Robert "Bob" Earl Evans

Robert Earl Evans, 85, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013.
He was born to the late Elias Earl and Gladys Sharp, March 2, 1928, in Grand Ledge, MI. Bob graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1946 and enrolled in the United States Air Force (1948-1952). He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Following his career in the Air Force, Bob, enrolled at Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) where he graduated with a degree in Packaging Engineering in 1957.
Bob married Maxine Rose Whitford on June 18th, 1955 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lansing, MI. Following graduation they moved to California, ultimately settling in Santa Ana, CA.
Bob was a Packaging Engineer, spending over 35 years with Ford Aerospace, until he retired in 1991. During his career he worked on many classified projects.
Bob was an active member of King of Kings Lutheran Church. He loved wood carving, and won many awards including "Best in Show" at the Orange County Fair.
Bob is survived by his wife, Maxine of Santa Ana; step-brother, Richard Altman of Phoenix; daughter, Amy Olmsted of Newport Beach; grandson, Andrew Olmsted of San Francisco.
Services were held on Tuesday, June 4th at King of Kings Church in Garden Grove. Bob was laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery.

Audrey Mable Millbrook, Grand Ledge, age 83 passed away December 9, 2011 at Lansing. She was born August 22, 1928 in Delta Township, Eaton Co., Michigan the daughter of C. Howard and Clella (Chadwick) Feazel. Audrey's greatest joy in life was being a homemaker and caring for her grandchildren. She was a member of Delta Mills United Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilt making, oil painting, traveling and was a former beautician. Survivors include 2 sons, Roger L. (Kay) Millbrook and Ronald (Jane) Millbrook all of Grand Ledge; 2 daughters, Sally J. Emick of Pentwater, MI, Robin D. (Michael) Gonzales of Grand Ledge; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Kenneth (Eva) Feazel of Grand Ledge. Predeceased by her husband, Robert in 2009 also 2 brothers and 1 sister. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2011 - 2:00 p.m. at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge with Rev. Paulette Cheyne of the Delta Mills United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Hillside Cemetery, Delta Mills. Richard E. Fizzell, Haslett, born July 19, 1927 to Emory and Grace Fizzell, Richard E. Fizzell died February 1, 2009 at the age of 81. He was a musician most of his life, playing the drums in his own band. He also played along with the Leo Balcer Combo, the Brian Grinnell Trio, and several big bands including Tommy Dorsey. He recorded several albums during his music career. He was also a member of the Leiderkranz Club. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Donald Fizzell. He is survived by his loving wife, Neva Jean; daughters, Cindy (Douglas) Aven of Haslett, Kathy (Gerardo) Suarez of Lee's Summit, MO; grandchildren, Stephanie (Scott) Kazmierski, Amanda Aven, Roberto Suarez, Monica Suarez; and great-grandchild, Jackson Kazmierski. The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 6, 2009 at St. Martha Parish, 1100 W. Grand River Ave., Okemos, with the Rev. Jonathan Wehrle officiating. Interment will follow immediately in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Marjorie R. Galvin Cribley a lifelong Grand Ledge resident passed away March 26, 2016. Marge, a loving mother, grandmother, aunt and friend will be missed, especially her quick wit and sense of humor. She was born February 24, 1928 in Oneida Twp., Eaton Co., MI to the late Joseph M. and Anna P. (Kebler) Galvin.
Marge worked for Feldpausch for well over forty years, and in her younger years was actively involved in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Immanuel Lutheran Church and All-Star bowling league. She enjoyed trips to the casino and playing the slots, PullTabs, and was a big Detroit Tigers fan.

Chuck was born on February 12, 1928, in Lansing, Michigan. He was the oldest son of Kell & Florence Graham. He married Juanita Pingel on September 23, 1950. Career: affiliated with the oil industry for 35 years; employed by Lansing Board of Water & Light and the State of Michigan, Social Services. Attended First Congregational United Church of Christ in Charlevoix.

Born on December 9, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan, Jan went to that great bridge club in the sky on July 16, 2016. Her parents were Roy and Claribel (Rahn) Haysmer. Her husband James Pfeifer preceded her in death in 1991. She is survived by 3 children, Deborah (David), Dale, and Paul (Laura); 8 grandchildren, Kristie (Greg), Robert (Bethany), Emily (Sean), Karl (Gerri), Elizabeth, Pamela (Weston), Veronika, and Nicole (Michael); 8 great-grandchildren, Brooke, Kyle, Natalia, Hannah, Marcella, Helene, Samantha, and Astrid; sister-in-law, Louise; nephew, David and 2 nieces, Patricia and Laura. She was a sixty-year member of St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church and also served as their organist for seventeen years. While raising her children, Jan graduated from Lansing Community College and then Michigan State University magna cum laude with a degree in Education. She then taught in the Lansing Public Schools for over twenty years. Jan was a member of the education sorority Alpha Delta Kappa – Michigan Chapter, and held many positions over the years in its service. In addition, she held memberships in the Michigan Association of Retired School Professionals, Sparrow Auxiliary, and East Lansing Women’s Club. She also volunteered for many organizations over the years, including the Ronald McDonald House, answering phones for WKAR pledge drives, clerking at the Lansing UN shop, and working at Election Day polling stations. Jan was also known for her boundless traveling enthusiasm; she would venture to various destinations all over the globe, often taking her children, grandchildren, and friends along for the ride. Jan was a friend to everyone - it was only a matter of time once you met her. She was a sewing and quilting champion, shopper extraordinaire, and always quick with her sharp wit. She was born September 30, 1928 in Lansing, Michigan to the late Wilbur and Leora (Rogers) Hennis. Lettie lived a life of razzle dazzle and filled with much laughter and a spirit for life. She will be greatly missed by all who came to know her through her time as a business woman, employee and all around social butterfly. She had two daughters, Nedra Yuker (Penfield), who preceded her in death, and Michelle Penfield both of Grand Ledge. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Lisa (Joe) Sanchez of Grand Ledge and Michelle (Daryl) Stuart of Lake Odessa; five great-granddaughters and one great great grandson; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. She worked as a dental hygienist for several years. On March 26, 1955, she was united in marriage to Robert S. Simonds Jr. She was a member of First Congregational Church UCC in Kalamazoo for many years. In her younger years she danced professionally and had studios in Florida and California. She was an active member of Sigma Phi Gamma. Doris was an avid golfer and loved to travel. Her greatest joy was watching her grandchildren perform on stage and on the field. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Everyone loved her strawberry jam and canned peaches.

Neil E. Pingel lifelong Grand Ledge area resident passed away unexpectedly November 15, 2014 while hunting. Neil was born January 31, 1929 in Grand Ledge, Michigan to the late Herbert and Agnes (Doty) Pingel. He was a graduate of Grand Ledge High School Class of 1946 and went on to serve in the Michigan Army National Guard for nine years. Neil was a carpenter, he owned and operated Pingel Construction and was a broker for Pingel Real Estate Company. He loved hunting and never missed an opening day of deer season for seventy-one straight years. He died doing what he loved. Neil also loved fishing and enjoyed many weekends at his cottage near Delton with his wife Esther. He was a member of Grand Ledge Baptist Church. Neil is survived by his wife of over sixty-four years, Esther (Purtee); son, Steve; grandchildren, Connie (Tom) Haviland, Steve (Becky) Hoeve, Angel (Jon) Arthur, Mary (Jason Milligan) Coscarelli, Neil (Carie) Coscarelli and Ed (Becca) Pingel; great grandchildren, Steve and Jacob Hoeve, Alex Haviland, Lily Arthur, Caden and Estella Milligan; son-in-law, Don Coscarelli and daughter-in-law, Helen Pingel. Barbara Jean Reed Farman, Sunfield, age 84, was ushered into the gates of heaven on Monday, January 28, 2013, at Eaton Community Palliative Care. Barbara was born to Lawrence and Ethel Reed in Charlotte on February 4, 1928, and lived in Grand Ledge during her childhood. She married Bill Farman, also of Grand Ledge, on October 17, 1947. They moved to Sunfield in 1953. Barbara worked as the secretary at Sunfield Elementary for 25 years and attended the Sunfield United Methodist Church for 60 years. She will surely be missed by her family and all who knew her. Surviving Barbara are her four children Jim (Jodi) Farman of Sunfield, Brad (Karen) Farman of Grand Ledge, Bev (Jeff) Mason of Bath and Julie Farman of Flint, 7 grandchildren - Jami (Jim) Oesch of Sunfield, Jessica (David) Christensen of Grand Rapids, Peter (Stephanie) Farman of Sunfield, Megan Guerriero of Bellbrook, Ohio, Jonathan Farman of Sunfield, Laura and Jenny Mason of Dallas, Texas, and 11 great grandchildren. George attended Grand Ledge High School and served in the United State Army. George married Donna Pontius on June 26, 1953. They had two children, Richard (Dick) and Debbie. George worked at Motor Wheel where he later retired and spent most of his days doing yard work and spending time at the cottage he built. George was a member of Grove Bible Church and an avid country music jammer. He loved country music and playing the guitar. He is survived by his daughter Debbie (Mike) Ketchum of Eagle, son, Richard (Denise) Sargent of Grand Ledge, 3 grandchildren, Michael (Larissa) Ketchum, Christine (Daniel) Jenkins, and Richard Sargent II. He has 4 great granddaughters, Alana and Nayah Jenkins and Khloe and Nikki Ketchum. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Sargent and sister, Maxine Hoerner.

Trellis was born in Grand Ledge, Michigan on August 7, 1928, the daughter of Charles and Zola (Miller) Sattler. She attended Grand Ledge School. Trellis married Leo Schneider on December 1, 1945 and he preceded her in death on October 7, 1995. Trellis was a homemaker; she loved her family, her garden and her dog Chilli. Trellis was well known to all her friends for her handmade fruit and vegetable baskets, and woodworking skills, she was very handy with a hammer.
She is survived by her son Gene and Gloria Schneider of Leslie, MI, daughters; Jeannette and Larry Thelen of Hastings, MI, Suzanne and Charles Blackmer of Carson City, MI, Jacqueline and Carl Brown of Stanton, MI, Vickie and Terry Black of St. Johns, MI, and Theresa and Ronald Anderson of Sugar Grove, VA, sister Etoile Howard of Lehigh Acres, FL, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Lansing - Barbara Darlene Peters, Our Dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother went to bask in the glory of Jesus on June 5, 2021. Born Barbara Darlene Sharp on August 18, 1928, in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Mom graduated from Grand Ledge Class of 1946 and went on to graduate from Toronto Baptist Seminary in 1949.
In her lifetime she worked many jobs, eventually retiring from Lansing School District as the "cookie and salad lady" amongst many other duties.
Mom had many hobbies and interests in her lifetime including painting, gardening, and camping. Above all she enjoyed spending time with her family but most importantly; she loved to spread the love of Jesus.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Stanley and two sons: Jeffrey (Pamela Wager) and Christopher. Barbara leaves behind her children: Shirley Peters, Gary Peters (Kim), Nancy Zerkle (Bill), Dan (Lisa) Peters, and 18 loved and cherished grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all of us.

Ervin Emmett Starr, lifelong Grand Ledge resident, passed away January 10, 2024 with his loving family by his side. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Erv was born on February 28, 1928 in Delta Township, Michigan to the late John Ervin and Abigail (Dailey) Starr. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in the Class of 1947. While still continuing to farm, Erv worked a career that spanned twenty-one years for Oldsmobile, retiring in 1997; although, he was born and raised a farmer at heart. He looked forward to, and loved time spent with his family during holidays, special occasions, and especially at the cottage in Lake City. There were many traditions and precious memories created at Lake Missaukee, culminating every year when the whole family came up for the Greatest Fourth in the North. Erv was a ball of energy and liked to keep busy whether it was “puttering” in the yard, “doing chores”, selflessly taking care of others, and generally never sitting down. He was a master story-teller, loved to tell bad jokes, and enjoyed big band music, especially Glenn Miller. Erv was a lifelong learner who enjoyed history, especially the WW II era. He had a penchant for Little Debbies and almost any flavor pie. Erv loved to play cards and looked forward to his monthly euchre club with the same friends for over 50 years. He was a devoted and lifelong member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 56 years, Karlene Kay (Irish); children, Theresa Starr of Grand Rapids, Scott (Cathy) Starr of Grand Ledge; grandchildren, Abigail, Nicholas, Gabriel and Christina Starr; brother, Ronald (Cappi) Starr of Grand Ledge. Erv was preceded in death by his beloved twin brother, Alvin and sisters, Kathleen Bassett and Roberta McCully.

Don is survived by his wife, Lorraine; daughter, Ann (Paul) Jorgensen of Greenville; son, David (Sue) Teman of Greenville; grandchildren, Molly (Rick) Court, Nathan (Jen) Jorgensen, Taylor Jorgensen and Melissa Perks; Ryan Teman, Adam Teman, and Emma Teman; one great grandchild, Alix Court; brother, Jim and Carole Teman of Greenville; and nieces and nephews. Norbert "Norb" Francis Vander Steen

Norbert "Norb" Francis Vander Steen, age 92, died Saturday, October 24, 2020 at his home in Greenville. Norb was born June 5, 1928 in Grand Rapids to Paul and Henrietta (nee Van den Heuvel) Vander Steen. The family moved to Grand Ledge, Michigan in 1931. Norb graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1946 and joined the U.S. Army to obtain the educational benefits of the G.I. Bill. He spent the majority of his 18-month enlistment in Japan and received an honorable discharge in February 1948. Norb wasted a year after returning to Grand Ledge, playing golf and taking a three-month trip traveling throughout the U.S. He enrolled at Western Michigan University in the fall of 1949, as did his wife-to-be, Jackie (nee Edwards). They both were in the School of Education and were prepared to sign teaching contracts when Norb had an opportunity to join Michigan Bell Telephone Company in a special college hiring program. Norb had many different jobs in various locations during his nine years with Michigan Bell and accepted an offer to join its parent company, AT&T, in Chicago in 1963. He had various jobs in different locations, including in Detroit as District Operations Manager, and also temporary assignments in New York and New Jersey. Family was always very important to Jackie and Norb, and they wanted "the kids and grandkids" to visit them rather than downsizing and traveling around the country. They bought a lot on Clifford Lake and built a home to accommodate everyone when they visited. They moved to the lake in 1992 and had many joyful weekends with the grandkids as they grew up. Jackie passed on to the Lord in 2008. Norb was twice blessed when he married Susan Remmy, who happily joined the family in 2010 after a whirlwind courtship. In 2013 they moved to Greenville. During his "idle time", Norb joined many clubs and organizations, where he gave generously of his time, talent, and treasure to help them achieve their goals and objectives. Norb was an active member of St. Charles Catholic Church, serving as Stewardship Chairman for 14 years and on the Diocesan Stewardship Committee for six years. Other organizations and groups included Clifford Lake Association, Michigan Lakes and Streams, Central Montcalm Community Foundation Board of Directors, Knights of Columbus, Montcalm County Republicans, Commission on Aging Board of Directors, Ray Booth American Legion Post 101, Greenville, and VFW Post 5065, Sheridan. Norb also enjoyed gardening and sports, especially football, as well as government and politics. Surviving are his wife, Susan; children, Kim Vander Steen (Anthony Cinquegrani), Kris (Mark) Lula, Kurt (Jane) Vander Steen, and Kent (Cindy) Vander Steen; grandchildren, Krista (James) Hunsanger, Steven (Marirose) Lula, John Vander Steen, Michelle Lula, Jennifer Lula, Kelli (Andrew) Lerg, Claire Cinquegrani (Jake Druecke), and Sarah Vander Steen; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are step-family, Greg (Cindy) Remmy, Matthew (Katharine) Remmy, and Michelle (Sean) Keen; siblings, Eileen Dick, Thomas Vander Steen, and Lorraine Rogers; brother-in-law, Bill (Darlene) Hellerich; and sisters-in-law, Irene Caton, Elizabeth Conrad, and Barbara (Bob) Nevins; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to Jackie, Norb was preceded in death by brother, Ray Vander Steen; brothers-in-law, Cletis Dick and Danny Rogers; and sister-in-law, Mickey Vander Steen. The family would like to offer special thanks for Faith Hospice, especially Rita nad Kathy, for their loving care for Norb during his last days. The Mass of Christian Burial for Norb will be celebrated at 11:00 am Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at St. Charles Catholic Church with Rev. James Wyse presiding. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am at church prior to Mass. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Grand Ledge. Forrest D. Waldo, Sr.

Forrest D. Waldo, Sr., Grand Ledge, MI, passed away April 16, 2009 in Delta Township. He was born October 31, 1927 in St. Johns, the son of Clyde and Nellie (Summers) Waldo and was raised in Wacousta. He spent the majority of his life in sales, early on as a car salesman for Story Oldsmobile and in 1963 started Waldo's Auto Sales where he sold cars and had a towing service. During the 70's he became known as the King of Artic Cat Snowmobiles by having the largest dealership in Michigan, and selling them by the semi load. He had a passion for the outdoors and spent his life hunting whitetail deer and fishing in the Lake George, Michigan area. He had hunted moose in Alaska, bear in the U.P. and elk in Wyoming. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Mary J. Waldo (Hays), children Roberta A. Jones (David), Jackie L. Kebler (Fred), Judy K. Kuebler (Mark); Kim D. Smith ; Forrest D. Waldo II, Wesley R. Waldo (Kelli), 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, sisters Bethany Cain and Mary Lou Vandermoere. He joins his son Sayle Thomas Smith, and grandson Derek Steven Jones who preceded him in death . A funeral service will be held Monday, April 20, 2009, 11:00 A.M. at the Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge with The Reverend Fr. James Eisele, Celebrant.
