This list of the graduates from the Class of 1957 was compiled from the GLHS 50+ Alumni Association yearly listings of who had passed over the last year at each annual reunion year. We are sure there are others we have missed that need to be added to this list. If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

Joan Alice Deppa, Ph.D.
February 21, 1939 — November 17, 2021 (Aged 82)
Joan Alice Deppa, Ph.D. 82, journalist, author, and longtime professor at Syracuse University, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at her home in DeWitt, New York.
Born on February 21, 1939, in Lansing, Michigan, to Dr. Woodrow A. Deppa and Helen E. (Mayes) Deppa, Joan (or as her family called her, Jo) decided when she was 18 years old that she would not live a boring life. The life she led was fascinating and anything but boring.
Upon graduating from Michigan State University with an undergraduate degree in journalism, Joan spent 16 years as a newspaper and wire service journalist, including seven years in Europe as a correspondent and editor for United Press International. As a woman in what was, at the time, a highly male-dominated profession, Joan endured her share of sexism and unfair treatment, but embraced her role as a trailblazer. On assignments all over Europe, Joan covered everything from Parisian fashion shows to the Arab-Israeli war. According to an article in the University of Syracuse newspaper The Daily Orange, Joan's UPI assignments included interviewing Prince Rainier of Monaco, covering student riots on the Riviera, and profiling an American expatriate who hid French revolutionists in her chateau after the German invasion of World War II. Joan was also one of the first women journalists to cover the Olympic games; at the 1968 Winter Games in Grenoble, France, she was invited to join the U.S. Olympic luge team for a ride on their sled (an offer she respectfully declined).
After returning to the United States, Joan became an assistant professor of journalism in the School of Mass Communications at Virginia Commonwealth University, where one of her students recalled that she kept a cobblestone from the Paris riots of 1968 on her desk. Joan earned her Ph.D. in journalism from Michigan State University in 1981 and went on to join the faculty of Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1984. There, she taught courses in news writing, reporting, critical perspective on news, communicating with computers, electronic publishing, and computer-assisted investigative reporting. An early adopter of technology and its use in the journalistic process, Joan helped establish the Newhouse School's first computer lab. She retired from the Newhouse School in 2015 after 31 years. In her academic career, Joan mentored and influenced scores of journalists whose ranks include Pulitzer Prize winners.
Joan was principal author of the 1994 book, "The Media and Disasters: Pan Am 103", which chronicled the 1988 bombing and crash of Pan Am Flight 103 in Lockerbie, Scotland, that killed 270 people, including 35 Syracuse University students returning home from a study abroad program. Written with three of her colleagues in the Newhouse School, this seminal work examined media coverage of the event in the context of the increasingly powerful role of the media and its effect on the journalistic process. Joan's research and expertise subsequently expanded to encompass issues related to journalistic and media ethics. She was frequently asked to comment on media coverage of domestic and international catastrophic and terrorist events, including the coverage surrounding September 11, 2001.
Among Joan's teaching passions was grammar, having learned its importance early in her journalism career. Her class "Practical Grammar for Public Communications" – known affectionately by Newhouse School students as "Grammar Slammer" – incorporated interactive computer lessons and slide shows punctuated with her quirky sense of humor. She was known for bringing her beloved Airedale terrier Lolly (short for Lollipop) to the Syracuse campus and often included Lolly in video presentations to help teach grammar concepts that students had trouble grasping. After retiring from Syracuse University, Joan worked on developing an interactive grammar textbook.
According to Joan's profile on the Newhouse School website, she enjoyed "long walks in the woods, reading mysteries, and exploring cool websites." The anchor of Joan's life was the land her family owned in Charlevoix County near the village of Boyne Falls in northwest Michigan. The land encompasses a small river and cedar swamp, a red pine plantation, open meadow, and hardwood trees. Joan's parents raised Christmas trees and kept horses there while she was growing up, and family would visit from far and wide during summer vacations. The family referred to a cabin at the top of the hill as the House of the Three Bears, and in 1998 when Joan's father and stepmother, Woodrow and EvaBelle, donated a parcel of the land to the Little Traverse Conservancy, it was named the Three Bears Mountain Preserve. For as long as she was able to travel, Joan would return each year to relax, unwind, and write.
Joan was a longtime active member of Park Central Presbyterian Church. The care of Joan in her final years by the church's pastoral team and by her neighbors was invaluable and greatly appreciated by her family.
Joan is survived by a son, Chris Taggart, and grandchild, Marie Taggart, both of London, United Kingdom; brothers, Jerold Deppa of Sitka, Alaska, and James Eddy (Judy) of Grandville, Michigan; brothers-in-law and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and former students, all of whom were dear to her, and who will miss her dearly.
In addition to her parents Woodrow and Helen, and her stepmother, EvaBelle, Joan was preceded in death by two sisters, Janet Deppa Schultz (Robert) and Julia Deppa Hosley (Thomas).
A memorial service will be held for Joan at 11 AM on Saturday, December 11, at Park Central Presbyterian Church, 504 E. Fayette Street, Syracuse, NY 13202. The service will be live-streamed. There will be a reception following the service, if covid restrictions allow.

Mary Jane Swanson Northrup
February 15, 1939 -- December 25, 2017 (Aged of 78)
Mary Jane Swanson Northrup, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 25, 2017 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mary Jane was born on February 15, 1939 in Lansing, Michigan to Stanley and Doris (Smith) Swanson, and grew up in nearby Grand Ledge surrounded by a large and loving extended family.
Mary Jane’s father Stanley was part of the Swedish settlement in Mecosta County, and she spent time on the family farms in that area as a little girl. Her maternal grandfather, Hubert Smith, was a chemistry teacher and superintendent. A natural organizer, Mary Jane had much in common with her grandfather Smith. Mary Jane visited her Smith grandparents often and traveled with them growing up.
Mary Jane graduated from Grand Ledge High School and attended classes at Michigan State University. Mary Jane married her love, Richard C. “Dick” Northrup, Jr. in 1959, and they honeymooned at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Grand Hotel became a touchstone for Mary Jane and Dick, returning countless times over their lives, and hosting many family gatherings on the Island. Grand Hotel also inspired Mary Jane’s home decorating style.
After their wedding, Mary Jane and Dick lived in married housing on Michigan State’s campus where they made lifelong friends. Mary Jane approached things in life for the long run and had the determination to stay with them. This quality showed in her faith and in sustained friendships. And although family and career interrupted college, she returned to school years later to complete her bachelor’s degree.
Mary Jane loved her family and enjoyed laughing and spending time with them. She especially held her parents and sisters, Marta and Kathy, close and spoke with them almost every day. The family spent many summers at her parents’ cottage on Morrison Lake. Because of this, Rick and Karen developed a strong bond with their Swanson grandparents. Through her example, Mary Jane passed down an appreciation of family to her children.
Mary Jane relished traveling, visiting almost every state. Mary Jane often accompanied Dick on his business trips so she could be with him and “see what I can see.” She loved to people watch and would always position herself out in public so she could observe all the passers-by.
Mary Jane was a stickler for good manners and also believed you should always look your best. “You never know who you might run into,” she would tell her children. When money was harder to come by, Mary Jane made clothes for her family. She received a sewing machine as a wedding present from her parents and put it to good use. To keep young Rick and Karen properly attired, she sewed sport coats, dresses, pants, and jackets for all occasions. Early family pictures feature the kids in her lovingly made clothes. Mary Jane also made many of her own clothes during this time, picking from the latest fashions in magazines she and her sisters would look through at the family cottage. Later, Talbots became a favorite place to shop for her signature style.
Professionally, Mary Jane worked first for East Lansing Public Schools, at Bailey Elementary. She then worked for many years with Dick at the Michigan State Florists’ Association before joining the human resources department at Michigan State University. Mary Jane loved working for MSU and retired from there in 2004. Mary Jane was also a volunteer, and did so at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for 20 years.
Retirement gave Mary Jane the opportunity to travel and spend more time with her kids, grandkids, sisters, and many friends. Mary Jane and Dick purchased a small place in Florida. They became part of the great Okemos winter migration, seeing many Michigan friends in Florida each winter, to their great delight.
She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her children, Richard C. “Rick” (Dawn) Northrup III, and Karen (Mark) Kissinger; her grandsons, Colin Northrup, Graham Northrup, John “Jack” Kissinger, and Peter Kissinger; her sisters, Marta (Jack) Giesecke and Kathy (Jeff) Jackson; her brothers-in-law, Bruce (Jan) Northrup and Gary Northrup; and many nieces and nephews. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 3 pm at Okemos Community Church, 4734 Okemos Rd., in Okemos. Guests are invited to stay after the service for a reception at the church. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 12, 2018 from 1 pm to 3 pm and again from 5 pm to 7 pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing and also from 1 to 2 pm prior to the funeral service on January 13. Private interment will follow at a later date.

Kenneth Elmer Walsh died unexpectedly on June 21, 2021. Ken was born June 27, 1939 to Eleanor and Willard Walsh of Lansing, Michigan. He grew up in Wacousta with his brother Ronald.
Kenny, as he was known through high school, was a loyal friend, a hard worker, and a caring soul. He attended the Starr School - a one-room brick schoolhouse on Grand River Highway. Adult and community education became his passion. After teaching at Sexton High he went on to have a 35-year career with the Michigan Department of Education in adult and continuing ed, followed by directing the Michigan Association of Community and Adult Ed and working with ATS Educational Consulting Services. Ken was proud to be part of policy-making to increase educational access for everyone: from incarcerated people to adults who didn't speak English.
In 1986 Ken married Marilyn Newkirk Mandigo, formerly of Traverse City and Grand Rapids. They lived in the Palm Springs area for the past 6 years. In addition to his loving wife, Marilyn, Ken is survived by daughter Deborah Mandigo of La Quinta, CA; son, GK (Laura) Mandigo and granddaughters Juliet, Jessica, and Genesis (Larry) and great-grandson Jorge Rios-Mandigo in San Diego.
