Norma Baxter Marshall
June 11, 1925 -- May 31, 2016
Norma June (Baxter) Marshall, 90, passed away May 31, 2016, at Brookdale Senior Living in Wilsonville, Oregon.
Norma was born June 11, 1925 in Roxand Twp., Eaton Co., MI, daughter to Lyle and Reva (Boyer) Baxter. Her family moved to Grand Ledge, MI, while she was in elementary school, and she resided there through early adulthood. She and her husband, Albert Marshall (also from Grand Ledge) were high school sweethearts prior to WWII. They married after the war, in December 1945, when Albert returned from Navy service in Hawaii.
Both Norma and Al were naturally industrious, and held jobs at early ages. Norma began working in a bank during her teens. That career continued until age 87, in spite of many years spent moving state to state, since her husband's lumber sales job required frequent moves. They settled in Canby, Oregon in 1971, finally putting down roots. She was employed from that time until 2013 by 5 Oregon banks: U.S. Bank in Oregon City, then later in Canby: Guarantee Bank, Canby Union which became First Interstate, and, finally, Wells Fargo Bank. She loved serving the public, and enjoyed bantering with customers and hearing about their lives. It was her vocation rather than her job. Her Wells Fargo retirement was in 2013.
She was active in the Congregational church, during her youth in Grand Ledge. Her Christian baptism occurred in 1998, along with husband Albert, at Valley Christian Church, Wilsonville, Oregon, (where her son, Doug Marshall, is now pastor). Since moving to Wilsonville, she has worshiped with their congregation.
Her family and friends will remember Norma's spunky, fun-loving personality. She always seemed younger than her actual age, and put people at ease through laughter. She enjoyed bestowing gifts upon others, but had a harder time accepting them.
Surviving is one daughter, Pam (Nick) Napier of Meridian, Idaho, and one son, Douglas (Lisa) Marshall of Donald, Oregon; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley Baxter and Larry Baxter, both of Grand Ledge, Michigan, one sister, Carolee (Gary) Hart, Grand Ledge, and a sister-in-law Harriet (Vaughn) Baxter, also of Grand Ledge, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Albert O. Marshall, her parents, Lyle and Reva Baxter, a brother, Vaughn Baxter, and one great-grandchild, Figi Grace Marshall.
A family graveside service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, OR.

Dorothy Rose Matz Skillings
October 17, 1925 -- December 16, 2017
Dorothy was born in Willow Springs, Illinois on October 17, 1925. Soon after, her parents, Henry and Amelia Matz, moved to a small family farm on Bauer Road, near Wacousta, Michigan. There, during the Great Depression, Dorothy grew up with her 3 siblings, Walter, Lucille and Harold. She attended a one-room schoolhouse and Kebler Elementary School.
At age 15, Dorothy left the farm to attend Grand Ledge High School, while living and working as a hired girl in local households. She also worked in the local brick and chair factory, and assisted the war effort by working at the General Motors factory, at that time manufacturing airplane engine parts.
Dorothy graduated high school in 1943 and then went off to college. She was the first Grand Ledge High School recipient of a scholarship from the University of Michigan Alumni Association. She lived in Stockwell Hall and various rooming houses in Ann Arbor with roommates who became lifelong friends. Dorothy graduated with a bachelor of science in June 1947 with a degree in Geology from the School of Natural Resources.
The newly graduated geologist took a job with Shell Oil in Shreveport, Louisiana. She made fast friends with other female coworkers. On a blind date Dorothy met Walter W. Skillings, who was working as a mechanic for the Air Force after serving in the Army. After a whirlwind romance, they were married on March 31, 1951 at Barksdale Air Force Base.
The married couple moved to Ann Arbor so that Walt could go to college. He studied while working as a college bus driver or occasionally as chauffer for the university president. Walt and Dorothy had a son in 1953, Jerry. After Walt graduated with a degree in sociology and metallurgy, the married couple moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for employment.
Walt worked in the open hearth at J&L Steel Company in Pittsburgh and became a supervisor. Two girls were born: Carol in 1959 and Laura in 1962. At this time, Dorothy became a homemaker. They raised their young family in Baldwin Borough, a Pittsburgh suburb. Dorothy became active in the PTA, scouting, and helped to launch a new Head Start preschool.
Walt died in 1970, and Dorothy moved the family back to Lansing, Michigan. Here, she worked as a groundwater geologist for the Michigan Geological Survey Division in the Department of Natural Resources. During her career, she was instrumental in a number of projects, including the mapping of lakeshore sand dunes, developing a statewide map of geological land formations, and supervising the first compliance and enforcement unit in the Survey. Before her retirement in 1988, Dorothy made a point of mentoring young women working in the sciences, and encouraged a number of women to seek high level positions. Dorothy's accomplishments were honored by the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame.
Dorothy enjoyed a long and relaxing retirement. She completed several volumes of family genealogies, hand knitted exquisite sweaters and vests, visited friends and family, and became an avid reader. She most enjoyed the company of her children, their spouses, and her grandchild.
Dororthy was an independent and self-sufficient woman who would always draw from her experiences of living on the farm during the depression. Because of this, she was able to fulfill her dreams of becoming a geologist. And, as a result, she came to value education and the pursuit of learning. She imparted these same values to her children, and supported them unconditionally with love and encouragement to achieve their dreams just as she realized her own.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Jerry (Abby Spector) Skillings, Carol (Tom Stanton) Skillings, and Laura Skillings, her grandchild, Anna Skillings, and her brother Harold Matz. She is preceded in death by her sister, Lucille Beech, and brother, Walter Matz.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on behalf of Dorothy to WKAR TV at the MSU campus in East Lansing or the Capital Area Humane Society.
