Class of 1959
This list of the graduates from the Class of 1959 was compiled from the GLHS 50+ Alumni Association yearly listings of who had passed over the last year at each annual reunion year. We are sure there are others we have missed that need to be added to this list. If you know of any graduates who have passed who are not listed here please email the information, including the year they passed, the date, and for the women their maiden name to:
[email protected] We are only looking "online" for information because we have hundreds of obituaries to research. We realize that there are other resources we could use to look up this information in libraries in electronic or paper format but we do not have the time to dedicate to that. If you have information for someone who has passed please let us know and we will make any changes to information we have previously posted. If we have no other information we will just list “NO INFORMATION WAS AVAILABLE” as part of their listing. The obituaries, or other information if it was available for the graduates that have passed, follow the listing. Thank You! |

The Honorable Judge John L. Conover, was born in Danville, Illinois on August 19, 1941 to Robert E. Conover and Esther Doris Laflen who preceded him in death.
John graduated from Michigan State University with a BS Degree in Economics and later graduated first in his class at the Detroit College of Law, now known as Michigan State College of Law. He married the love of his life, Karen D. Figg on January 3, 1964, and they set out on a wonderful life adventure that included careers of public service and family blessings for both of them.
John and Karen moved to the Flint area where he had a flourishing family law practice and Karen taught High School English. He was appointed to the 67th District Court of Genesee County in 1993 where he served for 24 years with such distinction and fair-mindedness that even criminals often credited him with turning their lives around. While putting his family first, John joyfully managed to wrestle his court dockets to the ground and still volunteer to coach little leagues. He was equally at home in hunting gear and flashy sports’ coats. He was a master of corny jokes, sage advice, and colorful stories, all delivered liberally to friend and stranger alike. He was manifestly generous with his time, patience and wealth. He fiercely believed in the American dream of hard work and lived it out with enthusiasm as a model for his family and friends. “Retirement” was a foreign word in his vocabulary. He recently ran and was elected to the Genesee Intermediate School District board of directors. And he and Karen wrote a book about his years on the bench: all part of his “nonretirement.”
He is survived by his wife and closest friend, Karen, after 59 years marriage. His fantastic children left to cherish the memories of a devoted father are BreeAnna (Scott) Moore and Chad (Julie) Conover. The doted and deliciously spoiled grandchildren are Brandon Conover, Lilian Moore, Ciera Conover, Miriam Moore, Zoe Conover and the 5th grade phenom: Oscar Moore. He is also survived by his sister, Judith (Allan) Sanders, three wonderful nieces and one terrific nephew, brother-in-law Stephen (Marjorie) Figg and John’s feisty 94-year-old mother-in-law: Marian Figg who says of John: “He leaves a mighty big wake.” Appropriately, John’s favorite Louis L’Amour novel describes Judge Conover perfectly: The Last of a Breed.

Paul Cooper
February 18, 1940 — March 29, 2022 (Aged 82)
Mr. Paul Cooper, age 82 of Nashville, MI passed away on March 29, 2022 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.
Paul was born in Lansing, MI, February 18, 1940, a son of Mary and Lloyd Cooper. He was raised in the Grand Ledge area and attended local schools. When Paul was a young teenager, he left school to begin working at the Grand Ledge Chair Company, learning the trade of Upholstery. Paul’s exemplary work ethic and attention to quality, quickly earned him the title of Master Upholster. Paul’s specialty was custom unique furniture that required the eye and talent of a true craftsman. Many of the pieces he produced over the years were done using basic tools and a technique called “spit tacking”. Paul would place a handful of upholstery tacks in his mouth, then using the magnet on his hammer remove the tacks and hammer them perfectly into place on the piece of furniture he was covering. Her perfected this technique and often worked faster than most modern staple guns. Paul’s workmanship extended beyond local shops and homes, as many items he helped produced are still being used in building at our nation’s capital. Paul was employed at the Grand Ledge Chair Company from 1956 until the company closed its operations. He then opened his own shop, Cooper Upholstery, in his Nashville home.
He was the husband of Janice (Randall) Cooper. Paul had visited Nashville Baptist Church with friends where he was introduced to Janice. The couple were married in 1977 at Nashville Baptist Church and made their home together in Nashville, MI. Paul & Janice loved their church family and were active in several different areas of ministry. Paul enjoyed greeting each Sunday and serving as an usher, while Janet worked as the church secretary. Paul was generally a shy reserve gentleman, until he put his clown costume on! In his role as “Sir Oliver” the clown, Paul was right at home entertaining in just about any venue or event making balloon animals and other fun props.
In 1988 Paul & Janice needed a change, so the upholstery shop was closed, the house sold, and the couple moved to Lakeland Florida. Paul began working at Disney’s Epcot Center in the custodial services area, and once again his unwavering work ethic and attention to detail yielded two “Spirit of Disney” awards. He truly loved working at Disney and looked forward to escorting his “Northern” friends and family through the parks when they came to visit during the cold winter months.
Paul is survived by his beloved wife Janice, his sons Lloyd (Dieona) Cooper, Tory Roscoe, daughters Deborah Morawski, & Cynthia Smith, sisters Laura Shepard, June Pennfield, grandchildren Madelyn Updyke, Sydnie Rohn, Keith & Stan McKelvey, Joshua Roscoe, Brandon Mugridge, Evelyn Mix, Steven Roscoe and Thomas Roscoe. He was preceded in death by his son Larry Roscoe, sisters Betty Miller, and brothers Arthur & Richard Cooper,
A celebration of life will be held at Nashville Baptist Church later this spring.
“Paul could take anybody’s day and turn it into sunshine with a few simple words”
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Daniels Funeral Home - Nashville, MI. For further details please visit our website at www.danielsfuneralhome.net.

Herbert "Herb" C. Domres
February 15, 1941 -- October 21, 2006 (Aged 65)
Burial: Oakwood Cemetery
Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, Michigan, USA
Herbert C. "Herb" Domres, 65, of East Bay, passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at his home, following a strong and courageous six week battle with cancer.
Herb was born in Lansing on Feb. 15, 1941, to Dorothy Alice (Upner) and Herbert William Domres. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 1959. He married Joanne I. Hoogenboom on April 27, 1963, at Gull Lake.
Herb's family remembers him as a doer. He held in high esteem a work ethic that left no room for compromise or cutting corners. He was very mechanical and always held to the premise to be precise in any project he worked on. This led to respect from customers and work associates in his work as a service manager in the heavy equipment industry. Herb had been employed by John Deere Company prior to moving to Traverse City in 1981, and then continued with the same type of job in the Traverse City area. His employer and friend at Northern Michigan Equipment Co. summed it all up when he said that his business would not be where it was today without Herb's expertise and attention to service and detail. Herb always gave more than what was expected and was extremely dedicated to his work. He was a man of few words, but spoke volumes through his actions.
Herb is survived by his wife, Joanne; children, Sheryl (Scott) Ashurst of Williamsburg, and Mark (Andrea) Domres of Traverse City; grandchildren, Allison Ashurst, Corbin, Campbell and Cutler Domres; sister, Marie Domres; brother, Fritz (Karen) Domres of Charlotte; father-in-law, Richard Hoogenboom of Gull Lake; brother-in-law, Ronald (June) Hoogenboom of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; three nephews, Andrew, Tyler and David; niece, Lisa; aunt, Margarett Kronk; and other extended family.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Genevieve Hoogenboom; and other extended family members.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with Rev. Barbara Hoig, Hospice chaplain, officiating.
Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 5 until 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions in Herb's name can be directed to the Traverse City Junior Golf Association for the Herbert C. Domres Scholarship. This obituary was originally published in the Record-Eagle.

She loved country music, dancing, swimming and the son! In her younger years she also competed in horse/barrel racing in the rodeo. She played the French horn and played basketball in junior high school. She loved animals, camping and having fun throughout her life. She was well known for not only being a great mom to her own children, but she was a mother to all her children’s friends too.
She was known best in her community for her love of teaching people “Bible Truths.” She always had a deep desire to help others. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in her early teens and spent over fifteen years in her volunteer pioneer ministry work throughout her life. Her children and students described her as a very kind, patient and good listener. She helped many in her community, through their study of the bible, to improve their lives to have happier families.
She married and became a devoted mother at age eighteen. She set a sterling example for her children and worked hard to instill a love for Jehovah God in their hearts too. She never complained and always had a smile.
One of her children is quoted as saying, “One of the things I will remember most about mom is how selfless she was. She would do anything and everything good for others. She would go without so that someone else could have a little. She was the greatest woman I have ever known!”

Among Bonnie's cherished pastimes was her love for camping and traveling; she particularly enjoyed her annual mother-daughter vacations. One of her and her daughters most treasured traveling memories was their white-water rafting adventure. Bonnie was an avid Detroit Tigers and MSU Spartans fan. Over the years, Bonnie enjoyed scrapbooking and going out to eat with her family. Gregory Chapman Kennedy
April 7, 1941 — June 25, 2023 (Aged 82)
Gregory Chapman Kennedy, 82, of Grand Ledge, Michigan, passed away on June 25, 2023, in Lansing, Michigan. Greg was born on April 7, 1941, in Grand Ledge, Michigan, to Leon C. Kennedy and Laura (Blundy) Kennedy.
At the age of 18, Greg enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Kimpo Air Base in Korea.
Greg worked as a double-trailer feeder driver for United Parcel Service for 31 years, where he pursued his work with dogged determination and superior attention to detail. Over three decades, Greg received numerous safe driving awards, and he was inducted into the UPS Circle of Honor (COH), an elite group of UPS drivers who have each achieved 25 years or more of accident-free driving.
Outside of work, Greg pursued his passions of hunting, fishing, boating, woodworking, and landscaping. When our Beautification First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, encouraged the people in our nation to plant “A bush, a tree, or a shrub,” Greg Kennedy listened and made Lady Bird proud.
If you happened to be driving by his home on Crescent Drive in Grand Ledge or boating by his beloved retirement home on Hiawatha Drive in Cheboygan, you would often see Greg on his Wheel Horse and John Deere riding lawnmowers. He took immense pride in mowing and maintaining his lush, green grass. Greg’s lawn left a good impression to those who passed by his family’s home and became the envy of all the neighbors.
Family and friends will remember Greg’s talented storytelling, which included both colorful details and language. Greg felt most at ease in Northern Michigan, where he served as a generous host and guide. Those hosted by Greg received an introduction to the natural beauty and peaceful tranquility his native state offered.
Greg and his siblings cared for many unique pets while growing up, and his love of animals remained strong throughout his life. After his marriage to Lanie, Greg had his heart set on owning a Basset Hound, and he would eventually own four: Jenny Rebecca, Maggie, Sarah, and Holly. He and Lanie also adopted a very gentle and loving English Setter, Trixie. Several cats deemed Greg and Lanie worthy of their affection and made themselves at home in the Kennedy household also.
Greg is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Elaine; his daughter, Kristine Kennedy Grigsby; his grandchildren, Maxwell and Claire Grigsby; his brother, Charles (Ruth) M. Kennedy, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Greg was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Donna Rae Betty.
